Obituary For Thomas Boyd

MSG (Ret.) Thomas Boyd entered into rest on July 22, 2026. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he was the middle child of Jesse and Bertha Boyd. When he was six, his family moved to Titusville, Alabama. In 1956, his parents purchased their first home and moved the family to Roosevelt City.

Even as a child, Thomas showed a high intellect, a gift for math, a passion for world history, a quiet confidence, and a dry, witty sense of humor that stayed with him his whole life.

Thomas attended Western-Olin High School in Birmingham, where that sharp mind earned him a place among a select group of Black students admitted into the school’s engineering program — a rare opportunity for young Black men at the time.

In November 1958, Thomas joined the U.S. Army, where he began his career maintaining the encryption devices that secured military communications.

Over 27 years of service, including time in Vietnam and 15 years stationed in Europe, he advanced through progressively senior roles — serving as a Communications-Electronics Maintenance Chief, then as a Communications-Electronics Operations Chief, and finally as an Administrative Specialist and Platoon Sergeant. He retired from the Army at Fort Gordon in 1985, having risen to the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8).

Thomas returned to school and obtained his college degree in history from Georgia Military College in 1989, achieving a goal he had long set for himself.

He went on to work at the Veterans Administration Hospital, followed by his hiring at the Georgia Department of Labor in 1991, where he worked until his retirement in 2001 as a Unit Supervisor.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Bertha Boyd; his sisters, Jessie Hughes and Maxine Garner; and his son, Andree C. Boyd.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen M. Boyd; his son, Roger C. Boyd (wife Suzanne), of Snellville, Georgia; his daughter, Tanja Christine Boyd-Witherspoon (Terrence Sr.), of Tucker, Georgia; and his goddaughter, Tammie Williams, who assisted in his care during his final years.

He is also survived by grandchildren Keenan, Justin, Symone, Skylar, and Sebastian (children of Roger); Daniela, Roland III, and Thomas, his namesake (children of Tanja); and Harrison, Chauncey, Andreana, and Jessica (children of Andree), along with many great-grandchildren.

Thomas Boyd’s life was marked by perseverance, intellect, and quiet groundbreaking achievement built through his 27-year military career.

Above all, he loved his family deeply and was focused on each generation having more than the one before. He took great pride in knowing that his grandchildren would be able to achieve things he never had the chance to pursue himself. He will be deeply missed.

Public viewing will be Thursday, July 31, 2026, 2 - 6 pm at the funeral home.

A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 pm, Friday, August 1, 2026, at Kinsey & Walton Chapel.

Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
