Vernon Leavie Cryer Sr., was born on October 31, 1946 to the late Dorothy Mae Barnes and Leavie Cryer.
He was converted and baptized at an early age at Christian Fountain Baptist Church.
Vernon was known as “Jap”. He attended T.W.Josy High school in Augusta, Ga, He served in the Army National Guard. He was a commercial and residential painter. He loved his dog “Sassy” as he would say Sassy talks to me and I understand what she wants. His great-nieces and nephews called Sassy his wife. He loved his dog. He also loved listening to his music.
Everyone in the Augusta, Ga and Burke County area Jap was well known for painting , fishing, sitting under the tree cooking on the grill and driving around in his green truck. He was always ready to help anyone in need . Jap had a kind heart. He was “LOVED” by all.
He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Griffin and Patricia “Pat” Jones.
Vernon is survived by his dedicated son Vernon (Mary) Leavie Cryer Jr. Santa Maria, CA Grandchildren Alejandro Lee Cryer, Los Alamos, CA , Orlando Donovan Cryer, Portland, Oregon and Granddaughter his “Angel” Amelia Celeste Cryer, Santa Maria, CA.
His sister Marion Harris , Hephizbah, Ga , Brother Henry (Linda) Barnes Augusta, Ga and his devoted sister Debra Griffin , Martinez, Ga. He was survived by additional brothers and sisters in Mississippi.
Special great-nephew Demetric Evans kept him young and up- to-date with “all the movies. “Meat” as Vernon called him always had movie times together. “Meat” made sure his uncle was the best looking man in the facility with his Air Jordans sneakers and high dollar cologne from Dubai. Also a special thank you to his nieces and nephew: Yvonne Harris, “Buddy Boy" Ignatius Harris , “Bebe” Benetha Bass and “Tesa” Shakela K. Williams and Joe Kent. A Host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and friends. The pillars of the family are Uncle Marion Barnes and Aunt AnnPeal Jones.
Vernon “Jap” was a joy to be around and was full of love. He will be missed but his memories will live on throughout the lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 12, 2025 at 12:00 noon at Kinsey & Walton Chapel, 3618 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, Georgia.
