On Friday, May 1, 2020, Guy Wimberly, loving husband, father and friend passed away at the age of 81.
Guy was born in Baton Rouge, LA on November 8, 1938. He moved to New Mexico at a young age and never left. He was a graduate of Highland High School, the University of New Mexico and served 4 years in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he met the love of his life, Alice Dicks. They were married in 1959 and together they raised their two sons, Guy and Brian.
Guy Wimberly is a legend and synonymous with the sport of Golf in New Mexico. He was an outstanding individual competitor, club professional and much larger advocate for the game that he loved. He began by helping Highland High School win the state golf championship in 1956. At UNM, he won the Western Athletic Conference championship in 1963 and was also a two-time NCAA All American in ‘63/’64. In 1964 he became a Golf Professional and started his career at the San Mateo Golf Center in Albuquerque, NM. In 1969 he became co-head professional at Arroyo Del Oso golf course in Albuquerque, NM, with his partner, Bob Meiring. This partnership would continue for the next 37 years. His deeper involvement with the sport included serving on the National Board of Directors for the PGA of America and developing the collegiate Professional Golf Management program with his brother, Herb Wimberly. His efforts culminated in lifetime achievement awards and hall of fame inductions for the National PGA of America, the Sun Country Section of the PGA, UNM and New Mexico Sports hall of fame. This list of career accomplishments is severely abbreviated, but if you asked Guy about his un-equaled passion for golf he would say, “Alice is the wind beneath my wings”.
If you had the pleasure of knowing him, Guy left you feeling like his best friend. And if the world measured wealth in friendships, well, he was a billionaire many times over. He is survived by his wife, Alice. His two sons Guy (wife Phyllis) and Brian (wife Jennifer). Four grandchildren, Derek (wife Nicole), Kailey (husband Jesus), Bria and Charlee. One great granddaughter, Lillian. His brothers Herb and Rev. Don (wife Wendy), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant, twin girls who had yet to be named.
Cremation has taken place and services will be postponed until a later date.

I first met Guy at the age of 15 when I had what was then my dream job as a golf course maintenance boy at the San Mateo Golf Center in Albuquerque. In addition to course maintenance at SMGC, one of my favorite experiences was hitting as many buckets of balls as my arms could stand at the driving range there which at that time (1967) was one of the nicest places for practice in New Mexico. While employed there, Guy took an interest in me and many other youths who loved the game of golf. He was a consummate gentleman and teacher, and he taught me many great things about how to grip the clubs and perfect my own golf swing. He was, in my opinion, a fabulous teacher and a great booster to young golfers like myself. He remained a steadfast friend and counselor to many of my friends and me as we traveled our lives thru school in Albuquerque, and as we continued to labor toward better golf games at Arroyó Del Oso during high school golf team matches and tournaments. I'm so sorry to learn of Guy's passing so long after it occurred, but suffice it to say that his memory will remain a beacon that I will cling to with relish for what remains of my own life. RIP Guy. I know you're embraced by God for eternity for the wonderful life of service, teaching, and kindness that you lived on this earth. Mike Halpin, El Paso
I first met Guy when trying out for the Highland Hi Golf team in the mid 1950s. Guy made the team...I didn't. I could write a small book about Guy's golfing acumen, but would rather simply comment on what a great friend Guy has been throughout our lives. while in recent years we lived hundreds of miles apart, we kept in touch. How easy it is to remain in contact with those who never spoke cross words with others. We, his contemporaries, who are all walking the fairway to the eighteenth hole of our lives, can all say that we never had a better friend or a better mentor in golf and in life. We will miss you Guy. Kirk Graham
We first met Guy when we joined the Sierra Del Rio golf club in 2006, and we became good friends immediately. In addition to the esteem in which he was held in the golf community, he has held our love and respect to this day. We last saw him in Sept last year and, although he was enduring significant health issues, his spirit and devotion were undiminished. He will live on in our treasured memories of special times with him. To Alice we extend our sincere condolences in this time of great sorrow. You truly were the "wind beneath his wings", and remain the love of his life. May God bless you and all of your family as you begin the life chapter without his physical presence, and continue to hold him close through your loving memories of his presence in your lives. Go Bless, Charlie and Jean Coble
