James Michael (Mike) Harrelson, local businessman and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2025 attended by loved ones, after a brave struggle with severe illnesses. He was 72.
Mike grew up in Deming, his birthplace, but made Truth or Consequences his home some 30 years ago. He had begun a career in the automotive business while living in California. His natural talents for management and sales soon earned him success in the retail auto world. Mike became known for his “go-getter” energy and his enthusiastic relationships with customers and colleagues alike.
After returning to New Mexico and auto sales, Mike became the general manager of Story Cadillac in El Paso. Later, back again in Truth or Consequences, he worked at Whitehead Chevrolet. Most recently, Mike operated Mobile Vehicle Washing & Detailing.
Mike’s extended family includes his surviving sister, Barbara Harrelson; a daughter, granddaughters and great-grandchildren from an early marriage and divorce. He also leaves behind close friends and relatives, who, along with his dogs, have been his family over the years. We will miss you, Mike.
The Harrelson family is extremely grateful to Mike’s longtime friend Doug Whitehead, for his wholehearted support and assistance during a difficult time. In addition, Amanda Arrey, another friend and former colleague, and our cousin Jack (Bud) Harrelson, helped Mike on his final journey. A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date.
