Josefina Baquera Armendariz was born March 19, 1939 to Pablo Varela and Eulalia Samaniego in Charco de Pena Chihuahua, Mexico. She went home to be with her heavenly father on July 8, 2024 surrounded by children in the comfort of her home in Derry, NM. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mom was a well-known and respected member of the Arrey-Derry community. Together with dad and hard work they built the American dream. They were proud owners of Baquera Farms, MBJ Packing, Baquera’s Grocery and the Arrey Café. As time passed, we their children, took over the family businesses.
Our “Mom” was one of a kind. She was a phenomenal individual. Mom was very funny and enjoyed a good laugh. Family was her main priority. She is known as “Nata” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, to some customers at the Arrey Café, and to the congregation at New Creation Ministries.
Mom was a member of New Creation Ministries, where her son Angel, is the Pastor. She beamed with pride every Sunday morning, looking forward to hearing him preach, whether the sermon was exceptional or boring (though if you asked her, her son could never give a boring sermon). We don’t talk about his singing, because there is where she drew the line.
Coffee was always ready at 6AM, for her boys or anyone that wanted to stop by for a cup! She loved the sound of their laughter, even when she didn’t know what they were laughing about.
Mom’s interests included tending to her rose bushes at home and at the church and her pistachio trees. She loved watching sports. When the games were intense, she had to take a Tylenol to settle down from all the excitement so she could go to sleep. Her favorite players were Patrick Mahomes and Stephen Curry. She hated Lebron James. (Sorry Tony, I had to add that!)
Mom was very witty and sarcastic. Traits we all grew to love. She loved like there was no tomorrow. She had a “Servants” heart and was loved by many.
She was and will forever be a cherished Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother.. She loved us throughout a lifetime, and we’ll love her throughout eternity.
As her children, she was our “Mom” and our strength. She taught us the importance of hard work, respect, and morals. She helped us grow through her teachings, her laughter, and even her sarcasm. She was so strong and worked so hard to make sure we had what we needed to succeed. The time she dedicated to her family proved her faithful devotion to us. When we had children of our own, her commitment only grew. She loved them as only a Grandmother can do. Our children came to adore her, she spoiled them with love and affection. She treasured each one in such special ways. And even though they were denied more days and years with her, she has filled their hearts with beautiful memories that will remain a whole lifetime.

Although I only met Ms. Baquera a couple of times, it was enough to know how sweet of a lady she was. I had the privilege of tasting her delicious capirotada and chile colorado. My heart goes out to Saul, Michele and the entire family. Cherish the wonderful memories she instilled in all of you. May she rest in eternity in the Glory of God. Teresa Fresquez

She always had a funny remark, she loved her family and was a great example of a mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. I loved her smile after a sarcastic remark. RIP Josefina.
