Gratitude for the Life of Charline Bowen Browning
God bless your soul Ms. Charline. You finished the journey. Now you've got wings to fly away from this bitter earth. See no hills! Fly on up to heaven, where you can finally be free. I am but one whose life you touched while you were here on earth. You inspired a great many more, especially young ones, yearning and eager to grow and learn that they too could write and put words together like the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, a black man, considered the founder of modern Russian literature. You were raised up from a child to know that you could learn and be the greatest of all by your parents who were both educators at Prentiss Institute, Prentiss, MS. Upon your graduation from high school in Chicago, Illinois, your parents insisted that you go on to receive a classical education at Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee. You received your B.S. degree in Secondary Education in 1960 from Fisk University and your M.A. degree in Early Childhood Education in 1967 from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. You traveled this country and the wider world, a wife, mother, and certified teacher at schools on American military bases, and as an adjunct professor at colleges such as Big Bend Community College, Kaiserslautern, Germany. You remained inquisitive and dedicated throughout your career to educating and training up the child, studying Child Development at Central Texas College and at the University of Maryland. You lived and taught, and trained other educators, not just in Germany, but in other areas of Europe, as well as Japan. During your time overseas, you came across a book titled The Wind Done Gone, a provocative literary parody of the Southern classic Gone With the Wind that shocked the world when it was published in 2001. You were the one who gave me a copy of this hilarious book and I shall always treasure it. When you retired from your federal government teaching career, you returned to the place of your birth, Prentiss, MS, motivated still to share your love for children and expertise as a teacher. You taught at J.E. Johnson Elementary School, 2003-2007 and at Prentiss High School, in 2004. She didn't stop there, but went on to teach as an instructor at Piney Woods Junior College, 2004, where you became a professor, 2007-2008. No one could ever keep you down, my dear Charline. You lived a life that taught us the value of what it means to keep moving and reaching, searching and learning, trying to make living in this world real, not just for yourself, but for everyone in it. Rest now, rest easy my dear sister. Yes, you will be missed! I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of my friend, Charline Bowen Browning. With Love, Natalie R. Bell Nashville, TN
