OBITUARY:
Mary Hellen Harris (Betty) was born on April 16, 1955, to the late Ester Mae Harris and Phil Harris in Holmes County, Mississippi. Mary confessed Christ at an early age and joined Mount Sinai Church on Lynchfield Plantation. She attended Tchula Attendance Center for a short period of time. She worked at Freshwater Farm, Inc. in Belzoni, MS., from 1997 until July 23, 2008, when health issues arose.
Mary was the proud and devoted mother of four daughters. To them, she was a teacher, protector and their greatest source of strength. She led by example, showing her girls what is meant to be strong, faithful and full of grace-even in the face of life’s hardest moments.
Mary Hellen’s life and legacy were deeply rooted in Tchula, MS the place she called home. She carried her Southern charm with grace, treating everyone with kindness and compassion. She was always open-hearted, filled with warmth, laughter and love. Her personality could light up any room she walked into. Mary was funny and full of life-she didn’t sugarcoat her words and always spoke her mind with honesty, but from a place of love. Her mix of humor and truth made her unforgettable.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Ester Mae Harris; father, Phil Harris; grandparents, Addie B. Wilson and Crawford Wilson; three sisters-Cynthia, Barbara, and Virginia Harris; six brothers-Bobbie Stricklin, Eddie Stricklin, Johnny Harris, Tommie Lee Harris, Henry Harris and Phil J. Harris; and one grandchild, Ka’loni Elise Harris.
On October 28, 2025, Mary Hellen answered the Lord's call and gained her heavenly wings, surrounded by her family's love. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her spirit lives on through the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the beautiful memories she left behind. She leaves to forever cherish her memories her loving children: Twanda Harris, Sharon Harris, Sherry Harris(Koasha), and Peggy Harris, all of Tchula, Mississippi; five sisters-Dorothy Harris of Tchula, MS, Julia Gordon of Brooklyn Park, MN, Shirlie (Dexter) Newberry of Moss Point, MS, Mable (Delbert) Walton, and Dorothy Jean Harris of Ypsilanti, MI; three brothers-Jim (Carolyn) Harris of Cruger, MS, Joe Louis Harris of Pemberton, NJ, and Robert L.
