Betty Ann Haigood Sedgwick, daughter of the late Maggie Lula Wright Haigood and the late Julius Haigood, was born in Ridgeville, South Carolina. She was one of ten children born to Lula and Julius.
She attended the Dorchester County School District where she graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class. Betty continued her education at Allen University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. While attending college, she met her forever love, the late Langdon Sedgwick. Betty and Langdon were united in holy matrimony on August 21,1965 and celebrated 58 years of marriage until Langdon’s passing in 2023.
Betty and Langdon relocated to Harrisburg, PA where she became an educator in the Harrisburg City School District, from where she retired after 36 years of service. Betty also worked in the High Achievers Program, Capital Area Headstart Program and Camp Hill State Prison educating adults in the General Education Diploma Program. Betty never missed an opportunity to gently correct grammar or encourage proper speech. It was her way of sharing knowledge and reminding those around her that words matter. Teaching wasn’t just something she did; it was who she was.
She became active in the church at an early age at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Ridgeville, SC. where she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She remained a member there until joining Bethel A.M.E Church in Harrisburg, PA. Betty was active on the Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, Stewardess Board C, Missionary Society and Altar Guild.
Betty’s greatest fulfillment was the birth of her son, Ronnie. He was her pride and joy. She cherished the phone calls and spending time with her “Boy”.
She enjoyed completing crossword puzzles and word searches. Her home was a place of refuge, laughter, and unconditional love and acceptance. She opened her doors and her heart, offering wisdom, comfort, guidance, and a sense of belonging. Her generosity extended far beyond material support, but of a mother and matriarch to her family.
Betty passed peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the age of 90 and was preceded in death by her husband, Langdon; sisters, Eloise Doctor and Inez Myers; brothers, Clayton, Elridge, Bobby, John Henry, Alex and Melvin Haigood; special cousins, Doris Watson and Rosella Wright.
She leaves to cherish precious memories of her, her son, Ronnie Haigood, Sr.; grandchildren, Danielle Haigood, Ronnie Haigood, Jr., Tamarra Chapman (Julian), Tiana James (Harden), LaToiya Haigood, Jasmine Haigood; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, who she reared, Robin Haigood Nichols and Wendy Haigood; sisters-in-law, Carol Haigood (Melvin) and Thelma Haigood (Bobby); best friend, Mary Lloyd and a host of dear and beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
Betty leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, learning and family. She was a woman of grace, strength and unwavering devotion. Betty lived a life defined by faith, love, generosity and a deep commitment to family. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her and her influence will continue to live on through the lives she touched.
