Edgar Smith, affectionately called “Joe”, son of the late Fletcher Smith, Sr. and the late Helen Elizabeth Tribolet Smith was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He received his childhood education from the Harrisburg City School System.
In December of 1952, during the Korean Conflict he began his service to his country by joining the United States Air Force. He was stationed at the Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware until he was honorably discharged on July 30, 1956. Edgar received the Korean War Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
As a civilian, Edgar was employed by the city of Harrisburg and TRW where he eventually retired after 29 years of dedicated service.
Socially Edgar was a former member of the 20th Century Sportsman’s Club and was the pitcher for the Smith A.C’s softball team.
Edgar was known for tinkering with cars and his love for fishing allowed him to spend time with his family and friends. In his later years he would assist people in his neighborhood by taking them to the grocery store and to the casino.
On Sunday, March 3, 2024, Edgar Smith at the age of 88 years, shed his earthly body and gained his eternal wings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kim; one sister and six brothers. He leaves to cherish precious memories of him, his children, Edgar Turner, Kevin Smith, Edgar “June” Smith, Jr, Derek Smith, Eric Smith (Tracell), Durrell Smith (Portia), Barbara Smith, Pamela Smith and Tara Napper (Gary), all of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; 33 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren; his brother, Leonard Smith (Mary); his sister, Paula Lawing; a host of nieces, nephews, his personal care aide, Tara Daniels and extended family and friends all of whom will miss him, but most of all his love.
His life will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2024 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
