Obituary For Evans Lowery, Jr.

Evans Earl Lowery, Jr, 82 was born July 23, 1944 to the late Evans Earl and Annie Ruth Lowery, Sr. in Florence, South Carolina. He passed away on Thursday August 27, 2026 in the loving presence of his wife, Sheila and those who loved him.

A 1964 graduate of William Penn High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after graduation Evans enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a proud veteran. During time of war, he earned numerous awards and medals from the US and Vietnam governments. Evans carried forward a steady sense of purpose that shaped the life he built and the people he cared for.

Evans loved trains, planes and tractor trailers. He owned a Mack Tractor and proudly displayed his Mack “Bulldog” paraphernalia from the time of ownership until his final rest. “Charger” was his “road” name, which later became his nickname for over 40 years. He often boasted that he earned over 1 million over the road safe driving miles while employed at UPS, USPS, TransCon and Daily.

Evans loved riding trains, especially traveling to South Carolina to spend his summers with family. He often gifted train and bird memorabilia to family and friends. As an entrepreneur, he poured dedication into building and running his own businesses, American Courier Plus and American Standard Courier – work that reflected his reliability, loyalty and the thoughtful way he showed up for others. He shared those experiences with his grandson Quincy who followed in his footsteps in the courier business.

Evans loving sharing literature with others, especially Megatrends and Who Moved the Cheese. He gifted these books to persons he felt had entrepreneurial potential. He loved music, especially jazz, and was known for bringing the latest hits back to Harrisburg from out of state music stores. Evans found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful routines. Evans also enjoyed fishing and golf-quiet pastimes that suited his gently spirit and free-hearted way of moving through the world. He shared these pleasures with his grandchildren and friends.

Evans was an all-around good person: thoughtful, steady, and deeply caring. One who bragged about family members who attended HBCU’s, were musicians, enlisted in the military and entrepreneurs. One who had a strong entrepreneur spirit and believed in sharing faith, wealth and knowledge with others. He was known for a saying passed down from his mother - “Don’t worry about other people’s money. You worry about your own”. Known as “Charger” to his friends and the tractor trailer community, his family called him “Junnie”. Regardless of his nickname, all who knew him will remember him fondly as a kind person with a strong faith in GOD and family.

For 28 years of marriage, Evans was devoted to his wife Sheila, taking real pride in making sure she was happy. His love was not loud or performative; it was faithful consistent and kind-hearted-expressed in the everyday ways that simply mattered.

Evans is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Lowery; his daughter, Lisa D. Lowery-Spriggs; son, Evans Earl Lowery III (Tina); stepdaughter, Rickeena Neely; his grandchildren, Quincy, Najee (Erica), Nathaniel, Jr. (Alicia), Chentel, Prestige, Luelle, Nalis, Evans IV, Jeray and Michelle; great grandchildren, Kaizen, Hailey and Milani; loving nieces, Keyonia Jones and Yanesha Aiyalogbe and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Evans Earl Lowery, Sr.; his mother, Annie Ruth Lonnon Lowery and his sister, Linda Lowery Jones.

The family would like to extend a very special “THANK YOU” to Esther and Kim who shall always be known as the BEST caregivers ever, and to his VA Nurse Ashley and the entire Hospice Team.

On September 9, 2026, funeral services were entrusted by Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville, NC. The Rev. Walter Dockens of Trinity Baptist Church, Harrisburg, PA and Chaplain Pamela Haith of Statesville, PA officiated. Evans was laid to rest with full military honors at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Memorial Services will be held on October 1, 2026 at 10:00 am, Mt Olive Baptist Church, 1331 South 14th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104. Repass to follow the services.
