Gloria Ann Garnes-Jackson earned her crown, escorted peacefully to glory by a host of angels on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the age of eighty-five years old.
She was born in Steelton, Pennsylvania to the union of the late Lester Garnes and Anna Pauline Tate-Garnes. She received her formal education in the Swatara Public School System and was a 1957 graduate of the Swatara High School; where she was a member of the 1956 All-City Championship Field Hockey Team.
“Doye”, as she was affectionately called by her Sister Winnie, was a dedicated, loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She could make a pot of spaghetti and a bowl of potato salad that would ROLL your socks down!!
Having accepted the Lord as her personal Savior, Gloria was a life member of the Mt. Sinai AME Church, Edgemont, PA; where she actively served as a choir member, lay member and missionary. She was also a PROUD member of the Edgemont Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies’s Auxiliary, holding several leadership positions in service to the Steelton/Highspire and Edgemont communities.
In late 1959, Gloria started her professional career as a “Candy-Striper'' at the Harrisburg Hospital. Throughout her professional CNA career, she served families and patients at Blue Ridge Haven East, Homeland Center, Susquehanna Center and ultimately retired from Dauphin Manor in 1998 with over 40 years of dedicated and honorable service. After retirement, Gloria took on another equally important role; as a Food Services Specialist at Melrose Elementary School until 2010.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters; Phyliss Turner and Winifred Garnes-Pullins; her only brother, Park Eugene Garnes and one daughter, LaWanda Ann Jackson.
From 2011 until 2024, Gloria resided at The Homeland Center, affectionately known by her caretakers as Grandmom, Granny, Mom, The “Mayor” of Homeland and jokingly; Commissioner Carter’s girlfriend.
Gloria leaves to cherish precious memories of her, her children, Jeffrey Garnes (Leticia), Sharon Saunders (Randolph), Albert Jackson, Anthony Jackson (Lisa), Sheila Jackson, all of Harrisburg and Moses Jackson, Jr. (Hilda) of Tom’s River, NJ. Her memory will also be honored by her twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Additionally she inherited two daughters-in-love, Anita Payne and Rebeccah Devan; her long-term caretakers.
The family would humbly like to thank the entire Homeland Center and Staff for all of their support and care shown to our QUEEN over the last 13 years.
On behalf of the family; A special, purposeful and heartfelt THANK YOU is in order to Mr. Barry Ramper, President/CEO of The Homeland Center, for his continued support, transparency and friendship!
