It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Leroy Finley, Jr., who departed this life on May 13th, 2025, at the age of 75, surrounded by his loving family in his home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Born to the late Harry L. Finley, Sr. and the late Dorothy Cooper Finley, Harry was a cherished member of his family and community.
A proud graduate of William Penn High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Harry went on to earn a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, where he furthered his education while excelling in high school football. After dedicating 37 years of service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, he retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
Harry had a passion for life that shone through in everything he did. He loved singing, enjoyed playing chess with his brother Bob and found joy in fishing. A true entertainer, he was known for hosting memorable cookouts and family gatherings, where his genuine hospitality and exceptional grilling skills delighted all. Harry was not only a grilling expert but also a skilled hunter, often bringing home fish and deer meat to share with loved ones.
As a die-hard fan of the Washington Commanders (formerly known as the Redskins), Harry proudly collected memorabilia throughout his life, showcasing his passion for the team. His love for music was equally strong, with daily playlists featuring the classic hits of James Brown and the O'Jays, filling his home with rhythm and joy. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, affectionately known as "PopPop," and took immense pride in each of their accomplishments.
Harry shared an exceptionally close bond with his baby brother, Robert (Bob) Finley, who remained by his side throughout their lives. He took immense pride in his family name, "Finley," and was deeply connected to his heritage and family roots.
In 2003, Harry married the love of his life, Kathleen M. DiFlaviana, and together they created a warm and loving home. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathleen Finley; his son, Harry Leroy Finley III (fiancΓ©, Bridgette Carter); daughters, Kimberly Costley, Gilvonna M. Finley-Dancey (husband, Solomon R. Dancey) and Ayana Yasmeen Martin; a loving brother, Robert Finley (wife, Luella); 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and two beloved grandchildren, Victor Randolph Banks, Jr. and Angel Finley.
Harry Leroy Finley, Jr. will be remembered for his love, laughter and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
His life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.
