Obituary For Helen Washington

HELEN LOUISE WASHINGTON, daughter of the late Leroy and Emily Goldsboro Pitts, was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Helen received her formal education in the Harrisburg School System. Her career path included working at the Inn 22 Restaurant where she was known for her cheesecakes. Years later she became employed at the Harrisburg State Hospital as a Psychiatric charge aide.

In the community, she became a member of the Order of Eastern Stars and served faithfully for over 30 years. Having accepted the Lord as her personal savior, she united with the membership of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church serving for over 50 years.

Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend known for opening her home to feed and entertain anyone who would desire to have a delicious home cooked meal. She was truly a kindhearted spirit. One of her favorite sayings was “What are my kids going to do when their ATM is gone.”

Helen married the late Wilson (Sparky) Washington in Hagerstown, Maryland and to this union one daughter was born, Sharon Washington (Murphy).

Our beloved Helen Louise Washington, transitioned into eternal life on Monday, January 6, 2025.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Herbie; her brothers, Charles, James, Frederick and Harvey; sisters-in-law, Emily and Memphis and daughters-in-law, Alease and Sheryl.

She leaves to celebrate her life, one daughter, Sharon Washington (Murphy); sons, Reese, Edward, Kenneth, Brad (Stevie) and Otis (Silena); adopted daughter, Wendy Lowe, a favorite niece, Alice (Peaches) Pitts McArthur, a very special friend, Pauline Waters; 15 grandchildren, 25, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one aunt, Ruth Ridgeway of Georgia and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and friends.

Helen's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025 in the Sanctuary of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 212 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
