Obituary For John Burney, Jr.

JOHN BURNEY, JR., 73, transitioned into eternal life at his home in Coatesville, Pennsylvania on Friday, September 10, 2021. He was born in Harrisburg, the son of the late Thelma (Butler) Burney and the late John Burney, Sr. and step-son of Mae Ellen Burney who reared him. John received his formal education in the Harrisburg School District and attended the former William Penn High School. He entered the United States Air Force on August 25, 1967 and was honorably discharged on June 5, 1970. While in the Air Force, he repaired airplanes. During his working career, John was employed by Interstate Trucking as a driver for 20 years and at Verizon for 15 years. In his leisure, he enjoyed watching movies, collecting movies, debating politics, cooking on the grill, cookouts and hanging out with friends. He also loved the Philadelphia Eagles. As a child, he attended Bethel A. M. E. Church along with his siblings. In addition to his mother, father and step-mother, John was preceded in death by his brother, Barry Burney and his paternal grandparents, Sarah and Jessie Burney. He leaves to celebrate his life; his siblings, Patricia Williams (Marcus) of Philadelphia, Veronica Burney, Kathy Poole (Mike), Sadie Burns, Bonita Burney, Barbara Burney, Leticia Garnes (Jeffery), David Burney (Selena) and Nanette Burney-Mitchell (Kevin), all of Harrisburg, Marcella Burney of Arizona and Keith Burney of Harrisburg, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. His life will be celebrated on Thursday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with visitation from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Live Streaming of the service will be available on Major H. Winfield Funeral Home’s YouTube page. COVID-19 Guidelines will be observed with face masks and social distancing for all attendees.
