Obituary For Kenneth Jones

Kenneth Jerome Jones born in Washington, DC to the late Ezell Jones, Sr. and the late Thelma Marie (Thompson) Jones.

He received his formal education in the Harrisburg City School System graduating in 1969 from the former John Harris High School. He furthered his education at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

Before embarking on his working career, Kenneth enlisted in the United States Army. Upon leaving the military with a Honorable discharge in 1978, he then started his career as a Material Handler at the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot, from where he retired in 2008 with 23 years of dedicated service. Kenneth or Kenny as he was affectionately called was a proud father of two daughters, Keyonia and Yanesha Jones and one grandson Jaleel Keyon Nix-Jones.

He was an all-around sports enthusiast from an early age. He played midget baseball at MW Smith Holmes field for “Leftwich Funeral Home”. During his junior high years he played football at Edison Junior High School and during the high school years he played football and baseball for John Harris High School “Pioneers.” He always looked forward to the Thanksgiving Day football game against the William Penn “Tigers.” You could always find him Sunday afternoon rooting for his team, the Cleveland Browns.

Kenny enjoyed the music of the sixties. His favorite artists were Curtis Mayfield and Grover Washington, Jr. and his favorite song to dance to was “Mr. Magic.”

When Kenny’s health began to decline he went into the Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center where the residents grew to love and respect him. Throughout the years he developed so many nick names; “Juice” and “Hog”, being a few. Because Kenny had such a beautiful spirit, who enjoyed life and always had a smile, he was referred to by the residents and staff as Happy go lucky “Ken-Dog”.

Whenever Kenny would see you, he loved to share his thoughts and knowledge and he never forgot names nor a place that he had visited. He will definitely be missed by his knowledge of knowing what family and friends forgot. One thing about Kenny, he would never lie, he would always tell the truth, regardless of the circumstances and or the consequences.

“Jones” was an incredibly supportive “Older Brother”, a role he took very seriously, especially to his sisters who eventually became his dedicated care givers. He looked forward to their visits because he knew they would bring his favorite snacks, meals, i.e. (Milkshakes...he always asks why they didn’t bring a large one or two).

On Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 6:00am Kenny left his earthly tabernacle at the Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center joining his parents, Ezell and Thelma (Thompson) Jones; his brother, Avada “Skeet” Jones; his nephews, Shakka Kimber and Miles Johnson; his cousin Frederick Pitts, Jr. and his best friend (his dog) his road DOG and driving partner, “Sheba” and many other family members.

He leaves to celebrate memories of him, his daughters, Keyonia Jones and Yanesha Jones; his grandson, Jaleel Keyon Nix-Jones; his sisters and brother-in-law, Bernita and Kirk Tyson and Tammy Marie Jones; his brothers and sister-in-law, Ezell, Jr. and Pelbea Jones and Rondell Waters; his nieces, Lisa (Leroy) Johnson and Angel Glover; his great-nieces, Amber, Autumn and Ashlee Glover and Ava Kimber; his nephews, Senica (Sarah) Kimber; his great nephews, Malik Johnson and Miles Kimber; his aunts, Marion Austin, Sheraldine (Tiny) Cook and Barbara Thompson; a resolute companion who supported him to the end, Patricia Heron; a special cousin, Cise Thompson who was always supportive; his best friend from elementary school, Howard Carey; his bonus sister & brother-in-law, Carolyn and Donald Pollard and their extended families; his 1969 classmates and football team and many family members and Project family & friends.

Kenny’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Living Water Community Church, 206 Oakleigh Avenue, Harrisburg with viewing and visitation 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

COVID-19 Guidelines will be observed with face masks for all attendees.
