Leonard James Davenport, affectionately known as "Poppy" and "Lennie D.," was born in Harrisburg, PA to the late Thelma (Workmen) Davenport-Sharpe and Jefferson “Bubbles” Davenport.
Leonard received his education in the Harrisburg School District, where he was an active member of the football team. He graduated from the former William Penn High School in 1961. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War and receiving an honorable discharge in 1965.
Leonard was employed by the City of Harrisburg as the Health Officer, where he earned a reputation for being knowledgeable, tough but fair in the enforcement of health codes. He received numerous certificates from the Food & Drug Administration, the American Red Cross, and other agencies for his dedication to public health. He was also a past member of the American Legion Post #733, where he served as a Service Officer.
Throughout his life, “Poppy” had a deep love for children, often spoiling them with affection. He found joy in signing in the choir and listening to his cherished record collection, especially his beloved gospel music. Above all, he treasured spending time with his family and friends.
Known for his handyman skills, Lennie D. was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, generously sharing the talents God had blessed him with. He also enjoyed cooking for others, ensuring that everyone who came through his door was well-fed and cared for.
Leonard transitioned to be with his Heavenly Father on October 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Sharpe; father, Jefferson Davenport; sister, Eleanor Palmer and former wife, Barbara Davenport.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Doris (Newman) Davenport; his brother, Reverend Harold Davenport; two sons, Leonard Jason Davenport and Joshua Strawbridge; five daughters: Faith Davenport, Sonya Stokes (Clarence), Patrice Bratcher (Juan), Ruth Robinson (Marvin), and Jewel Smith (Gunzalis); a special stepson, Christopher Lakes; a special stepdaughter Rhonda Jackson (Terron); a devoted daughter-in-love Pammy Davenport; and a very special and devoted granddaughter, LaCresha Davenport, whom he reared as a daughter. He also leaves behind two cherished great-grandchildren, Tyrique Davenport-Coney and Ta’Raye Davenport- Coney, whom he also helped raise, along with 19 additional grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, his last “Heart”. Leonard is also survived by two beloved cousins, Yvonne “Bonnie” Gatling Pearson (Chester) and Beverly Johnson and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Poppy’s legacy of love, service, and faith will forever live on in our hearts.

Doris and family: I am thinking of you during this difficult time. I am so, sorry for the loss of our Lennie D. I'm so grateful for all the adventures we shared during our nearly 50 year friendship. He tagged me his "bestie sister-friend"from our days at Woodside Detention Center and beyond. "I'll keep our memories close to my heart, and I'll never forget him." Rest in peace, my dear brother and bestie guy friend" (SYITNL)
