Obituary For Linda Poteat

Linda Diane Poteat was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Willie Adam Smith and the late Willie Mae Turner Bogan.

At a young age, Linda relocated with her family from Montgomery, Alabama to Highland Falls, New York and later to Newburgh, New York. She attended Newburgh Free Academy and continued her education at Orange County Community College, where she earned an Associate Degree in Computer Science. Her education reflected her intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic.

In June of 1982, Linda met the love of her life, Edward L. Poteat, affectionately known as “Jamil”, who was serving in the United States Army at West Point Academy at the time. Their connection was immediate and genuine, rooted in love, loyalty, and deep friendship. After two years of courtship, they were united in marriage on June 16, 1984, in Newburgh, New York.

Their marriage was one of partnership and devotion. Through the seasons of life including military service, travel, relocation, and building a home, Linda stood faithfully beside her husband. Together they traveled throughout Europe and across the United States during his service, embracing new experiences and strengthening their bond. Eventually, they settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where they planted roots and built a lasting legacy grounded in love, resilience and commitment to family.

From their union, Linda and Jamil built a beautiful family, beginning with the birth of their son, Jameel Poteat, who was one of her greatest blessings and proudest accomplishments. She poured her wisdom, strength, and unconditional love into him, nurturing his character and encouraging his ambitions. Their bond was deep and unbreakable. She was his foundation, his safe place, and one of his greatest supporters. She took tremendous pride in the man he became and the legacy he continues to build.

Through that same union, she also gained a devoted daughter in law, Shayla Poteat, who became like a daughter to her, a true bonus daughter, standing faithfully by her side and supporting her through life's seasons with love, compassion and unwavering care.

Linda was also blessed with seven grandchildren, who were the absolute love of her life. They were her heart, her joy and her greatest source of pride, filling her days with laughter and purpose. She cherished each one deeply: Alayah Poteat (13), Josiah Poteat (12), Elijah Poteat (9), Brooke Poteat (8), Jameel Poteat, Jr. (6), Jamir Poteat (4) and Callie Lynn Poteat (1). Nothing brought her greater happiness than watching them grow, attending their events, and celebrating their milestones.

Linda was a wonderful Claims Manager at Delta Dental, but more than that, she was an extraordinary human being. She dedicated 34 years of service to her work and to the people around her. She oversaw daily claims operations with a strong focus on quality, compliance, and doing what was right for both members and colleagues.

Linda was affectionately known as the proclaimed Mayor of the Camp Hill office. She was the heartbeat of the room, the warm welcome in the hallway, the calming presence during the busiest moments and the reassuring voice that made everything feel manageable. Linda had a rare gift. She made everyone feel truly seen and valued. She did not just manage a team; she cared for each member of it.

Linda found her greatest joy in the meaningful moments of life. She loved spending time with her family, shopping, traveling and creating lasting memories. She faithfully attended her grandchildren’s events, cherished date nights with her beloved husband, and made it a priority to support her son at every event and milestone.

Linda was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Willie Mae Turner Bogan and her dear sister, Darlene Woodson, whom she loved deeply and carried in her heart.

She is also survived by her siblings: Robert Turner, Wanda Weatherspoon, Marilyn Smith, Connie Barnett and Timothy Smith, along with a host of in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

On February 27, 2026, Linda transitioned into eternal rest. Though her earthly journey has ended, her love, strength and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Linda's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 in the Sanctuary of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 212 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
