Obituary For Lucille Burke

Lucille Elizabeth Burke was the youngest of five children born in Lynchburg, VA to the late Alice Clark.

In later years, she relocated her family, along with her mother, to Pennsylvania, first Steelton then to Harrisburg where she resided until transitioning to life eternal in the early morning of October 9, 2026 at the blessed age of 98.

Lucille, after 20 years of service, retired from the PA State Labor & Industry. Feeling that she still had so much more to give, she came out of retirement to work for the Harrisburg School district as a crossing guard. She took so much pride in looking out for the safety of children as they made their way to-and- from school.

Embracing her passion of serving the Lord and being of service, Lucille immersed herself in doing volunteer work in addition to her church ministries. She was a member of Shiloh’s Mothers Board, The Hospitality Team, and served on the Shiloh Usher Board. She was a missionary for many years prior to becoming a church mother. She was a faithful server at Shiloh’s Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Society of Volunteer Women, where she gave countless volunteer hours at the Harrisburg Hospital in whatever capacity needed. She volunteered as a server at the Daily Bread to help feed the hungry. She also led the weekly noon-day prayer service at her former place of employment (Labor & Industry) to which she always looked forward. She was a dedicated child of God and enjoyed spreading the word to her family and strangers she encountered. She never shied away from telling everyone she met along the way, that Jesus loved them.

Lucille loved gospel music and could always be heard singing or humming songs of inspiration. She was a member of the community choir, CAMA, which provided her the opportunity to perform in concert both locally and abroad to Italy.

Lucille was a beautiful soul and loving supportive mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Clark; two sisters, Mary Jackson and Katherine Hill; two brothers, Russell Hemphill and Edward Clark; one grandson, Earl Grooms, Jr; two great grandsons, William Johnson and Jream Lee-Powell.

She is survived by seven daughters, Joanne Walker, Carol Grooms, Elizabeth Chisolm, Linda Sloane (Shedrick), Jessica Baltimore (Clinton), Annice Powell and Jennifer Carter (Charles); three ‘bonus’ daughters, Alicia Hernandez, Emily Enoch and Eugenia Moten; 21 grandchildren; a host of great and great-great grandchildren.

Mother Lucille's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026 in the Sanctuary of Shiloh Church of God In Christ, 5950 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111 with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.

Send flowers to the service of Lucille Burke
