Melvin F. Hinton Sr, the youngest of the late Wilson Hinton and the late Edith Sampson, was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
He received his formal education in the Carlisle School System. Soon after he joined the United States Army and served as a corporal in the Korean War. He was discharged as a disabled veteran in 1954. A few years later he worked for the United States Postal Office for forty-eight years. Upon retirement, becoming the longest serving civilian worker in the Harrisburg area in 2012. He also worked part-time for about twenty years at Second United Church of Christ in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Having accepted the lord and savior Jesus Christ as a young age, Melvin was reared in the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle Pennsylvania. He was also a former member of Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church when he moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
A life member of the Disabled Veterans Association, he loved to watch westerns, an avid Harrisburg Cougars, and Pittsburgh Steelers fan and spending time with family. His motto was to be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you and to always love everyone.
On Thursday, June 12, 2025 in the peace and love of his home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Melvin transitioned into eternal life where he was reunited with his parents, his wife Armetha of forty-two years and siblings Edna, Dorothy, Sarah, Charlotte, twin sisters Ruth and Grace, Mercedes, Donald, Helena, and Betty. His sons Zackary Anderson and Earvy Colden.
He leaves to celebrate his life his children, Mary Austin (Nathaniel) of Columbus, Ohio, Reverend Donrico Colden, Sr., Melvin F. Hinton, Jr. (Brenda), both of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, William T. Hinton, Sr., (LaTonya) of Brandywine, Maryland, Michelle J. Williamson Ricks and twins, Debra L. Hinton Brown (Antoine) and Heather L. Hinton, all of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; his 22 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Melvin's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11 :00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Melvin Hinton was the most outstanding Person anyone would want to know. My Family counted his Family was one. He was a great neighbor and was always volunteering to help. I enjoyed the 20+ years that I lived beside his Family. Mr. Mel as they called him will always be remembers for his love of his Family and a dedicated worker at the Post Office and Church. May he rest in peace with his Wife as they both enjoyed the love of the Lord, Jesus Christ. I will always treasurer his friendship and I am richer as a person because of his love and friendship. My kids, Billy, Shevette and Joyell loved them.
