Michael D. Goodman, Sr. "Goody", 68, of Penbrook PA, passed peacefully Thursday, April 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Buffalo, NY, on August 28, 1956, he was the son of the late Hattie (Hollins) Goodman and the late David Barnes, Jr. Michael was educated in Buffalo's public school system.
After relocating to Harrisburg, PA in his teens, he met and fell in love with Janice Reynolds. They would later marry on May 5, 1979. From this union, they were blessed with three children; Michele, Michael, and Matthew.
As a young man, Michael had a thirst for knowledge and enrolled in Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). In his adult years, working sometimes 14 hours a day to support his family, he would ultimately earn an Associates degree in Business Administration. Still wanting more, he then enrolled in Albright College.
In 1978, Michael started as a box car loader for United Parcel Service. He would soon be promoted to supervisor, a position he proudly held for 43 years until his retirement in 2021.
In his leisure time, Michael enjoyed completing DIY projects. He was a man of many gadgets. Michael enjoyed collecting coins and watches, traveling, and spending time with his siblings in Buffalo, NY. But most of all, Michael cherished making memories with his beloved grandchildren.
Michael was a great husband, dad, and poppy. He was a friend, mentor, and community figure. He was the 1st Black Councilman for the Borough of Penbrook, an accolade he held in the highest regard. He was loving, hardworking, giving, caring, a role model, and a compass for many. He was driven and prided himself on being THE PROVIDER. Michael knew the Lord.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Thomas Goodman, Jr.; sisters, Patricia David, Theresa Barnes, Joyce Goodman and best friend, Randy Stanback.
Michael's legacy is survived by his wife, Janice, of 46 years; daughter, Michele Goodman of Harrisburg, PA; sons, Michael II and Matthew Goodman, both of Fort Lauderdale, FL; granddaughters, KaShae Goodman of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Aniya Brown, Kielle and Naiyera Goodman, all of Harrisburg, PA; one grandson, Nicholas Jackson of Waldorf, MD; sisters, Jeanette Smith (Garnell Sr.), Yvonne Barnes, Cheryl Barnes-Robinson (Moses), April Barnes-Martin (Dale), all of Buffalo, NY; brothers, George Goodman (Sonia), Richard Goodman (Janice), Nathan Goodman (Laurie), all of Buffalo, NY and David Barnes III of King George, VA. Also left to cherish his memory are a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends and life-long friend, Barry Lewis.
His life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Michael, since your passing I still find myself in a state of disbelief, after all, we just spoke days before the unfortunate turn with your health. I'm so glad that we had a brief conversation not knowing it would be our last. There is so much that I want to say about this man who truly lived up to his surname Goodman. You were thoughtful, kind, generous, and funny. A man who loved the Lord and was committed to taking care of his family, a man who was a true friend to whoever was fortunate enough to be called a friend. I'll forever remember the many summer and holiday gatherings in Pembroke where you and I had eating competitions, 😋 I can't bring myself to say goodbye; it's much to finale, I'd rather say rest well my long-time friend, and brother-in-law, until we meet again. I Love you for eternity🙏🏽🫶🏽 Brenda L Cammack.
Rest in peace friend❤️My condolences to the family love always!
