Susie B. (Washington) Speaks, the daughter of the late Edward T. Washington and the late Bertha Brown Washington was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
She received her formal education in the Harrisburg School System and graduated from the former William Penn High School in 1950. In high school, her nickname was “Wennie” and she played sports.
In her early career, she worked at Olmstead Air Force Base in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Later, she retired from the United States Postal Service and The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Susie was a member of Trinity Church of God, now known as Trinity Church of Harrisburg, where she served with the Missionary Outreach, Church of God Women’s Ministry, Prayer Group and the Flower Guild.
On early Monday morning, June 19, 2023 at the UPMC Harrisburg Hospital, Susie B. (Washington) Speaks, at the age of 90 years old peacefully transitioned into eternal life. In addition to her parents, her son, Daniel Speaks, her grandson, Eric N. Harrison and her seven siblings, Emma Washington, Phyllis Washington, Myrna Beasley, Edward Washington Jr., John Washington, Vivian Dockens and Charlotte Miller, preceded her in death and she leaves to celebrate her life and cherish the precious moments of their lives together, her five living children, Charlene Speaks, Thomas Speaks, Jr., Yolanda Williams, Jon Kevin Speaks and Diana Speaks-Snead; two sons-in law, Vincent Williams and Clinton Snead; her ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Susie's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 in the Sanctuary of her church, 244 Harris Street, Harrisburg, PA with viewing and visitation 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.
