Obituary For Walter Sherer

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1

Walter Boyd “Butch” Sherer, a lifelong resident of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026. Born to the late Walter B. Sherer and Irene Sherer, he was a beloved member of the Harrisburg community who touched many lives during his time on earth.

Butch graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1973, where he showcased his athletic prowess as a football team member. Throughout his professional career, he dedicated himself to Conrail Railroad, now part of Norfolk Southern, from which he eventually retired. Beyond his professional achievements, Butch was deeply committed to his community, serving as a Baseball coach for Post 1001 and holding membership in the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.

A passionate Individual, Butch found joy in deep sea fishing with his friends and selflessly cared for his sister Linda until circumstances prevented him from doing so. His culinary skills were legendary within his family, with his children and grandchildren frequently requesting his signature red macaroni and cheese and sweet potato cheesecake. Butch’s love for bringing family together was evident in the warm, inviting cookouts he would host, creating lasting memories for those closest to him. A passionate and dedicated Dallas Cowboys enthusiast, he was known for his unwavering support of the team. His love for professional football drove him to travel extensively across the country, attending numerous games and experiencing the excitement of live NFL games firsthand. Whether home or away, he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys, demonstrating his deep commitment to the team and the sport.

During his childhood, Butch regularly worshipped with his close-knit family at Bethel AME Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where his mother, aunt, sister and cousins would gather together for services.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Emma Sherer, May Sherer and Cora Spain, along with his brother, William Sherer and nephew, Jimmy Wallace, Jr.

Walter leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by his caring wife, Desiree Sherer; devoted daughters, Antoinette Byrd (Christopher) of Harrisburg, PA, Tamara Smith (De’Anthony) of Lake Wylie, SC and Destiny Sherer of Harrisburg, PA; his sons, Antonio Blackstone of Harrisburg, PA and Davis Sherer of Harrisburg, PA continue to honor his memory. His legacy flourishes through twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, a vibrant family constellation that will continue to celebrate his memory along with numerous relatives and friends who will forever hold him dear in their hearts.
