Wilbert Conroy Powell, Sr., 92, of Harrisburg, transitioned into eternal life on Monday, March 11, 2024 in his home. He was raised on a family farm in Lawrenceville, VA and was the second oldest son of Notice and Emuel Powell, Sr.
After finishing high school, he moved from Lawrenceville, VA in 1951 to Steelton, PA. He married Geneva (Genevieve) Proctor (deceased) and raised their four children in Steelton, PA. Wilbert was employed at Olmstead Air Force Base and then transferred to New Cumberland Army Depot for 35 years until his retirement. Additionally, he worked part-time as a cook at his brother, Otisโs establishment in Steelton for several years after his retirement.
Wilbert was known for his culinary skills and was known to spend time in the kitchen preparing favorites including potato salad, red beets, oxtails, pig feet, lima beans and fried chicken. He loved to prepare meals for family and friends. Additionally, he was a great confidant and friend who spoke his truth. He was a member of the Steelton Cyrene Elks Lodge #169 as well as the First Baptist Church of Steelton. Wilbert found joy in listening to jazz and blues music as well as gardening and socializing with neighbors, friends and family.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Ann and brothers, Otis and James McCoy. He leaves to celebrate his life, his daughter, Lennita Anderson-Selvey; three sons, Lamar B. Powell (Retha), Wilbert โPeteโ C. Powell, Jr. (Lisa) and William S. Powell; his sister, Deloise Claiborne and brother-in-law Joe; his brother, Emuel Powell, Jr. and sister-in-law Gertrude Powell. Wilbert was blessed with twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
His children want to express a special thanks to his niece, Cheryl Powell, for her devotion to his well-being during the past five years.
Wilbertโs life will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 10:00 AM until 11 AM for family and friends.

So sorry to hear about the loss of Mr. JR Powell. He was a good friend of my Pop Pop (Earl Woodward) and our long time neighbor growing up on Bessemer St. he was also a good friend to my dad (Eric). I will miss stopping and saying hello to him as he's sitting on his porch with a big smile during the spring and summer. He will truly be missed in our community. He was a great friend and a great role model. Sending my sincere condolences and prayers to the Powell family.
