Davis Jr., Mr. Ben James, a resident of Tuskegee, Alabama, passed away on April 24, 2020 at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home. After 94 years of service on Earth, God called Ben to his heavenly home.
Ben was born on March 1, 1926 in Wetumpka, Alabama, to Ben Sr. and Hattie Davis. After graduating from W.B. Dolby High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and later served in the United States Army Reserve and Alabama National Guard until retiring in 1986. While his professional career was diverse, he was best known for his 34 years of service as a Surgical Assistant with the Tuskegee Veterans Hospital.
Following his retirement, Ben returned home to work with the Recreation Department of Wetumpka, Alabama. Four years later he went back to Tuskegee to work with the Tuskegee Recreation Department and the Tuskegee Job Corps as a Recreation Specialist. Ben’s love was baseball as a player and coach with Tuskegee Veteran teams. He coached youth baseball with his long-time friend, Solomon Knight, with the Rockerfellow Braves Babe Ruth teams; and he started the Post 150 American Legion Baseball program. His commitment to American Legion Baseball led to him become the Alabama State Commissioner of American Legion Baseball for thirteen years. Ben also enjoyed officiating college and high school baseball for 33 years with AHSAA and the SIAC Conference.
Ben was preceded in death by his mother and father, his loving wife, Elnora; four brothers, Bernard, Washington, Arthur, and Levone; and his sister Catherine Bailey.
Ben is survived by his three children, Charles (Suerianné), Ben III (La’Senie) and Sherri Turner (Greg); five grandchildren, Kelly, Charles, Michael, Nickalus and Lloyd; eight great-grandchildren, Sumayyah, Ibrahim, Sage, Nuh, Musa, Maxime, Zayden, and Freedom; nine brothers and two sisters, Edward Davis (Jeannette), Effie Smith, Calvin (Emma), Octavious (Jeri), Ann Matthews, Alphonso (Freddie), Nathaniel (Carol), Julius (Clarise), Lebron (Mary), Fredrick (Valerie), Arguster (Linda); sisters-in-law Mildred Davis and Dorothy Bennett; brother-in-law, Charles Connor (Greta); Uncle Thomas and Aunt Lula Davis and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ben’s legacy of service to his family and his community will always live in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him and was touched by him. As he rests in peace, he leaves a lifetime of memories to cherish.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in lieu of flowers and food, please kindly direct cards and other memorial gifts to: Mr. Ben Davis III, 1251 Little Brook Lane, Birmingham, AL 35235. The family will be planning a Memorial to honor and celebrate his legacy once travel and gathering moratoriums have been lifted. Please keep them in thought and prayer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you celebrate the life of Ben Davis, Jr., A life well lived.
To my family. Y'all help raise me, made me who I am and taught me love. Uncle Ben was the sweetest, smartest man. He willbe missed. He touched so many lives and left a wonderful legacy in the three of you.
To the Family whose love and compassion flowed freely from both of your parents and even through the three (3) of you, there are no grater smiles in heaven than those upon the faces of your parents.
There are so many college graduates that owe there success to your parents. Without their love and compassion, the standards they required to be around them and their example of a cohesive family unit, so many of us would still be lost.
To the three (3) of you, thank you and continue to be that which others strive for.
Eternal fond memories shall always be a part of your life.
Thank you so much for sharing your parents and family with me.
Eternally Grateful,
C. Leon Lee, II
