General Lee McKinney, Jr., lovingly called “Pop.” He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend whose kindness, humor, wisdom and steady presence made life better for everyone blessed to know him. Born on March 1, 1942, in Waxhaw, North Carolina to General Lee McKinney,Sr. and Naomi Davis McKinney whose guidance, discipline, and compassion shaped the foundation of the man he became. He passed away on February 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love that continues to guide and inspire us all.
Pop was a proud graduate of Barr Street High School in 1960. He approached life with purpose and determination. After completing a year of further education, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit and established McKinney Cement Finishing, Inc. for 45 years, he led his company with skill, fairness, and unwavering dedication.
In 1962, Pop married the love of his life, Betty Jean Houston McKinney. Their 56 years of marriage were marked by devotion, laughter, music, and deep faith. They build a home filled with love and togetherness, creating a family grounded in care, respect and joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean McKinney, son Gerald Lewis McKinney, Sr. (Renee); Grandsons, General Lee McKinney, IV and Lamanual McKinney, II; granddaughter, Utika Shamia Campbell; son-in-law, Gerald Leonard Sherman,Sr. and his parents, General Lee McKinney, Sr. and Naomi Davis McKinney.
Pop leaves to cherish his wonderful memories; his children: Marilyn Priscilla Glenn; General Lee McKinney, III (Renee); Sharon McKinney Stitt (James); Lamanual Lee McKinney, Sr. (Tracy); David Dwayne McKinney, Sr. (Beverly), Torrey Faray McKinney, Sr. (Ronda); Tanja LaShunne Mckinney; and Shea McKinney Sherman.
Family was his greatest joy and proudest legacy. He leaves behind 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great -grandchildren, each touched by his steady presence, gentle humor, and words of wisdom. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters Margaret Cureton (John), Clara Duckett, Ona Gallop, and his brother Hick McAfee, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and countless friends.
Viewing will be 12 noon on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Steele Hill AME Zion Church.
