Obituary For Roscoe Melvin Thompson

Mr. Roscoe entered eternal rest on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Prisma Health--Richland in Columbia, SC. He was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Pearl D. (Cunningham) Thompson.

He joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. After his service, he returned home and married Marian Joyce (Truesdale); a loving union that blessed them with five children. They shared more than 50 years together until her passing.

During his adult life, Roscoe worked at Springs Industries, where he became one of the first Black supervisors and one of the first Black members of what is now Founders Federal Credit Union. While still employed at Springs Industries, Roscoe opened his own electrical repair shop - a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit. Friends admired his sharp pool skills, and he could often be found, lining up the perfect shot. He loved the thrill of cruising on his Honda 750 motorcycle, the peace of casting line on a sunny fishing day, and the pride of polishing his beloved 1964 Chevy Impala until it gleamed like new. Music was another joy in his life; at one point, he even managed a gospel quartet, blending his love for harmony with his gift for leadership. His curiosity knew no bounds, extending to the skies through his interest in aviation and to the art of capturing moments with his camera.

Roscoe was a devoted member of Salem AME Zion Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and founder of Salem Men's Choir. He also contributed his electrical expertise to help build the current church's infrastructure. In addition, he was a proud member of King David Masonic Lodge #41.

Those left to honor his memory include two sons, Kenneth R. Thompson of Lancaster, SC, and Warren Eric Thompson of Charlotte, NC; three daughters, Regina Gayle Fletcher and Delara Joyce “Dee Dee” Thompson both of Columbia, SC, and Sherietta “Sheri” Thompson of Hendersonville, Tennessee; an honorary daughter, Queen Benson of Lancaster, SC; one brother-in-law, Curtis E. Truesdale, Jr. of Asheboro, NC; six grandchildren, Dion Thompson, Latoya Nevius, Kendrick Thompson, Georgeo Thompson, Christopher Thompson and Christi Fletcher, along with many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at Salem AME Zion Church by Reverend Claudette K. Felder, Pastor with Entombment in Lancaster Memorial Park.

Viewing will be 1-5pm, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at McMullen Funeral Home.
