Marrietta Carter Norton died on Monday, June 16, surrounded by family. Born on March 9, 1951, in Leary, GA “Mary,” as Mrs. Norton was known, was the youngest of five children of John and Willie Mae (Thomas) Carter, farmers, who instilled in her a love of family and a commitment to speaking and abiding by the truth.
“Mary and I were cousins, but really more like sisters,” said Barbara Jean Dudley. “Even when she was in Alaska, she never forgot us. She always wanted to make her way back to Leary, to her roots.” A woman of great strength and conviction, Mrs. Norton was proud member of the Class of 1969 at H.T. Singleton High School. In 1996, she returned to college as a working wife and mother and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University. She had a distinguished 24-year career as a contract specialist for the United States Department of Defense, where she worked her way up to the level of GS-12. During that time, she earned numerous awards and was proud to have been able to advance her career and distinguish herself in this way.
Raised in the church, Mary sang in the choir at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church as a girl. She also grew up to become a respected deaconess there, following in the footsteps of her father, who served as a deacon at St. Paul before her. Having grown up in a close-knit family, Mrs. Norton had a deep and enduring love for her siblings and parents, a devotion that extended to her husband of 44 years, Glennis T. Norton, Jr and their four children, Keith, Tina, Beverly, and Yolanda.
“Ma was fierce, determined and relentlessly loyal,” said her son, Keith Ingram. “Her unwavering love for our father and family drove her to travel from the red clay of Georgia to the permafrost of Alaska. Her love and prayers sustained me through four years of Army combat deployments.”
She leaves behind to mourn her: husband, Glenn T. Norton, Jr; son, Keith (Ayanna) Ingram; daughters, Tina (Tom) Bartell, Beverly (Robbie) Philyaw, and Yolanda Norton; sisters, Daisy Washington and Peggie Carter; brothers, David (Belinda) Carter, Jerry Carter, and Terry (Sherry) Carter; sisters-in-law, Zeta (Charles) Harris, Gwen Gordon, Sharon K. Ward, Brenda (Wayne) Embry, Johnni Carter, Vanessa (Anthony) Brown, Valarie (Dwayne) Settles and brother-in-law Dewayne (Corina) Norton; grandchildren Marcus Bartell, Breanna Bartell, Lauryn Ingram, Vanessa Bartell, Bennett Bartell, and Teegan Philyaw; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Willie Mae Carter; sisters, Eddie Mae Favors and Willie Ruth Carter; brothers, Moses Carter and John Carter, Jr; brothers-in-law Alvin (Belinda) Norton, Clinton Norton, Clemmie Norton, Milton Norton and sister-in-law, Denise Barnes.

With deepest Heartfelt sympathy. Mary was a lovely person and friend.
My heartfelt condolences to Mary's family. Mary was the first person who told me about tuff love for your children when were worked at Bellwood. I was young mother at that time and I didn't receive it then but years later I appreciated her advice and thank God I took her advice and it paid off as much wiser older mother. May the joy of the Lord be your peace in such a difficult time.
Rev. Yolanda and family, I pray that God continues to shower you with His peace during this season. Continue to walk this journey in your own way and in your own time.
Rev. Jameka Matthews, Pastor of Paul E. Kidd-Good Shepherd United AME Church.

From Glen Turner Norton Sr Brothers and sisters of Glen Turner Norton Jr and family. Our family is very sad and we mourn the death our family member, Mary. We truly loved Mary and she was such a joyful, inspiring, and dependable, family member and friend to us all. We read the Bible and we believed the scriptures where Jesus Christ boldly promised: "Just as the Father raises the dead up and makes them alive, so the Son also makes those alive whom he wants to. Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his [Jesus'] voice and come out." (John 5:21, 28, 29) Yes, Jesus Christ promised that millions now dead will live again on this earth and have the prospect of remaining on it forever under peaceful, paradisaic conditions. (Luke 23:43).; John 3:16 t For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life." The Bible compares death to sleep. It speaks of 'falling asleep in death.' (Psalm 13:3) Prior to resurrecting his friend Lazarus, Jesus explained to his apostles: "Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep." And Jesus did just that! The Bible says that when he called, "the man [Lazarus] that had been dead came out" from the "memorial tomb"—fully alive once again!—John 11:11, 38.
Revelation Chapter 21: 3,4, states ", With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: "Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." 5 And the One seated on the throne said: "Look! I am making all things new." Also he says: "Write, for these words are faithful and true." The resurrection hope give us comfort and we are happy to know that Jehovah God promises we can see family members again because of the resurrection.
To Ms. Mary's family remember she is with our Lord and has become whole again and no more suffering only happiness of love. We rejoice for her happiness. I truly enjoyed knowing and working with her. God bless you all.
