Obituary For Mother Dora Newton Singleton

~A Life Well Lived~

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the Strength of my life; whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

Dora Newton Singleton oldest daughter of nine siblings born to the late John Willis Newton and the late Millie Anderson Newton. She was born December 25, 1930 in Hampton County, South Carolina. Dora was educated in the public schools of Hampton County.

Her faith life began at an early age, at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Estill, South Carolina, where she accepted Christ as her Savior under the Pastorate Sound and Leadership of the Late Benjamin "Ben" Burison Sr., Pastor Emeritus.

She was raised in a small community with her family, established by her father the late John Willis Newton, named "NEW TOWN," in Estill, South Carolina.

In 1949, Dora married the love of her life the late Holbrook H. Singleton of Conway, South Carolina. Later Dora moved to Newark, New Jersey along with her husband, and their union was blessed with nine children.

Upon her return to South Carolina, she restored her membership with her home church, Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She later bestowed the honor as "Mother of the Church." She was a devoted and true disciplinarian. She believed if you spare the rod, you will spoil the child. Dora considered a spoiled granny who had a unique relationship with her grandchildren. Some called her "Princess." During the course of her life, she came in contact with numerous young people with whom she became a second mother and granny too. We will miss her.

Mother Singleton brought so much joy in everyone's life she came in contact with. She greeted people with a smile, her conversation always ended with "I LOVE YOU." All who knew her could count on a telephone call from her just to check on them. Sometimes she would call just to say, "I love you, and stay prayed up." All her love ones will carry in their heart the joy knowing Mother Singleton.

In addition to her parents and husband, Halbrook H. Singleton, she is preceded in death by (4) sons: Harold Singleton, Tony Singleton, Herbert Singleton, and Carl Dwayne Singleton; (3) daughters: Karen Cameron, Shirley Singleton Vancline, and Marie Singleton; (3) brothers: Mackie, Wesley, and Author Newton; (2) sisters: Virginia Deloach, and Catherine Smith.

Those left to celebrate her life and perpetuate her legacy, include her two devoted daughters: Doris Ann Barbee; Petersburg, VA, and Betty (Orell McClain) Folk, Lena, South Carolina; (25) grandchildren, numerous grand and great grands; (3) sisters: Earlean Scott, Ridgeland, South Carolina, Rosa Telfor, Piscataway, New Jersey and Millie Lee (Edward) Solomon, Baltimore, Maryland; (2) sisters-in-law; Lillie Newton, Estill, South Carolina and Helen Newton, Estill, South Carolina; A host of sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, and her family through Christ.
