Mother Ferdie C. Redd was born December 12, 1934, to the late Julius Best and the late Dora Cohen – Frazier in Fairfax, South Carolina.
Her faith in God was expressed at an early age when she joined the Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church in Fairfax, South Carolina.
She attended and graduated from the Fairfax Colored School in 1952. Fredie met and married the love of her life, the late Curtis Redd, and they relocated to Brooklyn, New York. To this union, two children were born, Robin and Jeffery Redd. The family later relocated to Long Island, New York.
In 1975, Fredie earned her Master’s Degree in Arts from Adelphi University, Long Island, New York. She taught for several years at P.S. 155 in Queens, New York.
Mother Redd displayed her strength, determination, and deep love for children each day. She was a kind and gracious person to all who met her.
After retiring, she returned to Fairfax, South Carolina, where she
purchased her home. She reconnected with her home church, and she served faithfully until her health began to decline.
On Thursday, February 19, 2026, Mother Redd took her flight with the angels from her residence in Fairfax, South Carolina.
In addition to her husband, parents, aunts, and uncles, she is preceded in death by (1): Daughter, Robin Redd, and (1) Grandson: Laquentin Smart.
Those left to cherish her remarkable legacy: (2) Sons: Anthony “Tony” Cohen, and Jeffery (Renee) Redd; (1) Grandson reared in the home: Curtis Redd; (4) Grandsons: Darnee, Sean, Justin, and Antonio; (2) Granddaughters: Mikayla Redd and Asia Cohen; (8) Great – Grandchildren; Special friends and co-workers: Juanita Williams and Sudella Fernandez; Beloved Cousins: Geraldine Finch and Louise Walker. A host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and sympathizing friends.

Ferdie we became friends working at PS 155 in South Ozone Park Queens & that friendship lasted until your passing. We kept in touch and I made my way to Fairfax to visit when you moved. I'm going to miss our long talks. We were able to trust each other with our feelings about anything and knew it wouldn't go any further than us. I will miss you my dear friend. Although our hearts ache we take comfort in knowing she isn't in pain anymore. I'm so glad mom got to tell you she loved you before you left us. RIP

Mrs Redd, you were an inspiration throughout my childhood. Always trying to keep Robin and I on the straight and narrow when it seemed I was being impulsive. You did it with love. Thanks for being a part of my life. Rest easy.
