Mother Ida Mae Dobson, the daughter of the late Jay Smith and the late Rosa Bell Manner, was born September 24, 1942, in Allendale County, SC.
At an early age, she was baptized at St. Matthews AME Church in Luray, SC. Raised in a loving home by her grandparents, Ben and Sophelia Charlton, Ida was educated in the Allendale County School system. She graduated in 1960 as MVP of the girls’ basketball championship team.
For a better quality of life, Ida relocated to Woodmere, NY, in 1964 with employment as domestic help. She sharpened her skills, gaining employment with Woodmere Nursing Facility. Ida was a dedicated employee, retiring after 37 years of service in 2004.
Ida had an open heart and an open door for anyone in need. She was a family care provider for Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn, NY, housing adult men for 22 years. Ida’s home was often temporary housing for relatives as they established their foundation. She would help with shelter, food, clothing, and even financial blessings, often putting herself last. Ida took great joy in making certain her baby brother, Joseph Manner, who preceded her in death, was okay.
Ida met and married the love of her life, Joe Dobson. Together Joe and Ida built a life sharing good times, as well as enduring difficult times, until God called Joe home.
On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Ida was called home to be the Lord.
She leaves to mourn her passing: (2) Sons: Jackie (Tresalyn) Charlton and Carl Anthony(Amanda) Charlton; (8) Grandchildren: Chad, Cassidy, Andrew, Reinaldo, Khaleed, Collin, Justin and Sydney; (1) Great-grandson: Caznell; (1) Brother: Harry (Henrietta) Manner; Aunt, best friend and caregiver: Alberta Charlton; Favorite cousin: David Charlton; Special friend for over 50 years: Willie George Wilder; (2) God-children: Tony and Sylvia Miranda.
