Obituary For William Herbert Reed
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul: He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
William Herbert Reed was born on August 2, 1934, in Allendale County, South Carolina, to the late Claude Best and the late Pearl Reed.
William's faith and belief in God were evident from an early age. He united in membership with Saint Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church, Gifford, South Carolina.
He was a proud graduate of Allendale High School and furthered his education at Denmark Technical School. He later relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he began a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, serving for more than 32 years.
After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, he became a member of Bethel Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was during this chapter of his life that he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Elizabeth C. Reed.
William had a genuine love for driving. In addition to his work as a tractor-trailer driver for the United States Postal Service, he enjoyed driving charter buses for church and community outings. His passion for the open road took him across the country, allowing him to travel through many states as a long-distance tractor-trailer driver.
He was an active and faithful church member, serving as a trustee and lending his voice to the choir. William was a man of few words, but as the saying goes, still waters run deep. His words of wisdom, humor, and captivating responses will forever remain a cherished part of his legacy. Among his favorite sayings were: “Love you and ain't nothing you can do about it.” “Well, we see what happens.” “Show enough!!” “Just one of those things.” And, most importantly, “Leave it in God's hands.”
His presence, wisdom, humor, and love touched the lives of many. Though he may have been a man of few words, the love he shared spoke volumes and will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He peacefully departed this life on August 7, 2026, at the blessed age of 92, at National Health Center (NHC) in North Augusta, South Carolina.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: (2) daughters: Betty Gray Reed; Estill, SC; and caregiver, Myrna (Louis) Corker; Augusta, GA; Special Goddaughter: Shaquana Mills; North Brunswick, NJ; Special Grandson: Keith (Tasha) Reed; Augusta, GA; Special Niece: Pastor Francine Peace; Augusta, GA; Special Niece: Ammie (Rodney) McBain; New York, NY (1) Brother: Elder Ernest Reed; Miami, FL; (3) Sisters: Edith Wright, Hattie Dixson, and Lillie Thompson, all of Gifford, SC; (1) Sister-In-Law: Bessie Brantley; Columbus, GA; (2) Grandsons: Kevin Reed; Estill, SC, and Kumon (Doris) Reed; Norwalk, CT; (4) Godchildren: Jasper Hankerson Jr.; Wingate, NC; Earl (Jessica) Johnson and Shanika Johnson; Staten Island, NY; and Rhonda (Dereck) Ransom; South Plainfield, NJ; A host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and sympathizing friends.
William's life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love a gift that will never be forgotten. While his earthly journey has ended, the memories he created and the wisdom he shared will continue to live on through generations.
