Mr. A.J. Lewis was born in January 15th, 1937, to Andrew and Gladys Lewis in Edinburg Mississippi. A.J. moved to Carthage at a young age and Carthage has forever been home to him.
A.J. graduated from Wesley Chapel High School. He married Minnie Jackson. He joined the Armed Forces and received and honorable discharge. He later remarried Grace Harris, she passed away in 2011
A.J. was also known for being a civil rights activist and entrepreneur.
He started his own construction company, A.J. Lewis construction. After the death of his daughter Debra Lewis Wilson, He founded the Debra Lewis
Wilson Scholarship Fund.
A.J. leaves many family members and friends to mourn his departure and to cherish his memory. He leaves his children Renee (Morris), Evelyn, Schmitz (Lakeshia), and Kevin. His oldest daughter, Debra passed away in 2001.
Three surviving sisters, Ora Mae Mann, Dayton, Ohio, LouAnna (Willie) Luckett, Detroit, Michigan, and Sandra MacBeth, Moss Point, Mississippi.
Mr. Lewis has 29 grandchildren - Andrew, Bria, Belit, Latasha, Shasha, Valerie, Tommy, Maacah, Joshua, Marcie, Whitney, Sharita, Derrick, Vanity, Ricky, Candace, Brandy, Jasmine, McKayla, Shamorrow, Ajah, Kevin Jr., Kaitlyn, Maycee, Gamonie, Sherri, Krystal, Brandon, Zahria, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He adored them all.
