Vernis Ruth Green was born January 24th, 1932, to the late Mr. william Clay Dennis and Mrs. Ophelia Dorothy Ree Greer Dennis in Carthage, Mississippi. Vernis was affectionately nick named “Moochie” by cousin Louie Whittington. She joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member throughout her life. She attended Harmoney Vocational School where she was Salutatorian of her class. Upon graduation she was awarded a full scholarship to Alcorn A&M College (now Alcorn State University) where she was to major in Home Economics. However, Cupid had other plans as she eloped with the love of her life, James Green.
Always wanting to make her own way, she captialized on her natural talents and completed Davis Beauty School earning her Beautician License. Known far and wide for her skills, she did hair for over fifty years, and she was steller at it. She loved baking from scratch, growing vegetabales in the garden, watching ball sports, listening to good music, and was known to dance around the house. A woman of great wisdom, she never met a conversation she didn’t like. Whenever she was making a point, she would say it just the way she meant it. An avid supporter of Galilee M.B. Church snd her community, she would send home cakes and sweet potato pies to church meals. In later years, she made delicious snowballs on the “Hill” as long as she was able. A woman of strong character, Moochie set the standard for her children in modeling how to show up for work on time, every time, and always give it your best effort.
