Kyle Anthony Hurt, age 68, of Memphis, TN, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
Born in Memphis on July 2, 1957, Kyle was the youngest of seven siblings. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. He received his early education at Larose Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington High School.
Kyle lived a full life. He was a longtime member of the Freedom Road Recovery Center, loved a good game of dominoes, and was an avid bowler and a member of several leagues. A devoted sports fan, he enjoyed traveling to watch the Tennessee Titans and cheering on the University of Memphis.
On June 27, 1986, Kyle married Gwendolyn Joyce Hurt. Together, they welcomed a son, Kyle A. Hurt Jr. A devoted father, he was also a father figure to many. Later, he married Teresa Anderson.
Known for his work ethic and dedication, Kyle worked for the United States Post Office, Hardin’s-Sysco Food Services, and later spent many years with Roadway Trucking, where he retired. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to establish his own company, Hurt Trucking.
After retirement, Kyle earned a Technical Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling from Southwest Tennessee Community College and served as a counselor for Freedom Road Recovery Center, work that gave him purpose and allowed him to make a difference in the lives of others.
Those who knew Kyle will remember his intelligence, humor, and the warmth he brought wherever he went. His quick wit and generous spirit had a way of making everyone around him feel at ease. Friends affectionately called him “One-Eyed Jack.”
Kyle was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. Hurt and Juanita Bills Hurt; a brother, Jesse Echols; two nephews, Sedgwick Presley and Derek J. Hurt; and a brother-in-law, Efrem E. Chism Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son and namesake, Kyle A. Hurt Jr. (Trevious); his daughter, Diana Hurt; his granddaughter, Ka'Mari Hurt; three brothers, Burnell Hurt (Sarah), Edwin Hurt, and Cedric Hurt; two sisters, Sandra Chism and Carita Hurt; his nieces and nephews, Tiffany Whitener (Michael), Ashley Hurt Stevens (Marques), Harambee Ryan, Cedric Hurt II, Sedrika Hurt, Efrem Chism II, DeMario Hurt, and Ossie Ana Alexander; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Camron Stevens, Jordan Stevens, Nahom Ryan, Jesse Rankins, Ebony Hurt, DeMario Hurt Jr., Calvin Daniel, Christian Daniel, Demari Hurt, Shasity Presley, and James Alexander; his companion and friend, Vivian Collins; and a host of family, friends, and former co-workers.
