Hazel Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 2:00pm at Parker Funeral Home 870 Saluda Street, Rock Hill, SC.
Hazel was a Rock Hill, SC native; attending public schools, to include Emmett Scott High School. She later lived in Charlotte NC and in the 1970’s, she moved to Washington, DC with her sister Mary (Tootsie). Hazel worked hard and was dedicated to helping care for her grandchildren.
She experienced some challenges but with the love and help of family, Hazel began her extraordinary journey to healing and was adamant about recovery and attending her meetings.
Hazel began to regain her independence; never forgetting her experiences as they gradually transformed into wings that lifted her to new heights in life. Until she entered final rest, Hazel dedicated her life to mentoring others and she would have been 40 years sober on July 21, 2024.
Hazel began traveling with her adult children to many Caribbean Islands, Mexico, New York, Washington State, California and the East Coast.
Hazel was well known and loved people. She was quick-witted had a wry sense of humor; she was always prepared with a come-back response.
Hazel loved baseball--her favorite teams, the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves. She loved KFC chicken; shopping at the thrift stores and family affectionately called her the “Lottery Scratch-Off Queen”!
Hazel returned to Rock Hill in 2018 to be with family. Two weeks before entering into eternal rest, Hazel traveled to Maryland to attend and bless her son Billy’s marriage.
Hazel was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Broom Truesdale Norris; her husband Robert Belton; her eldest daughter Patricia Ann Belton (Stinson) Davis and her sister Mary Ann Truesdale Murray.
Hazel enjoyed the special legacy of being the head of five generations. She leaves to cherish her love: One son, Billy Truesdale (Regina), three daughters, Willia Ruth Ratchford, Robin Brown (Garland) and Melissa Belton; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; and a host of family, friends, her AA family in DC and Rock Hill.
Hazel’s song has ended, but the melody will linger in our hearts and minds!
Parker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
I was so excited to have a mom again but God had a different plan. However, He did bless me with six months of a special relationship with mom. From the moment we met, she embraced me with such matter-of-fact acceptance. Thanking God for the special blessing of Hazel and for the gift of her awesome son, Billy. When I look at him, l see mom and when he cracks a joke, l hear mom. I will miss her, but she'll be forever in my heart.
Dear Willia and Family,
