DEACON L. L. HAWTHORNE, JR., transitioned peacefully into the presence of the Lord on September 17, 2026.
He was born to the late L. L. Hawthorne, Sr., and Leila B. Knight Hawthorne in Marianna, Florida, on March 8, 1936. He was the first of four children born to this union. He was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Spurgheon K. Hawthorne.
He was a man of faith. His faith journey began at the historic St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church where he was ordained in 1977.
His early education began at the former McChapel School in Marianna, Florida. He continued his education at Washington Senior High School in Pensacola, Florida, where he graduated in 1953. During his high school years, he distinguished himself as a talented basketball player and proudly lettered in the sport.
He furthered his education at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1957.
In 1957, he met and married Lucy Neal Speights Hawthorne. Their union was blessed with three very special children: Lorenza Lambert Hawthorne III (Sheila), Aloyn Dexter Hawthorne, Sr. (Linda), and Beatrice Segerna Hawthorne; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two sisters Barbara Hawthorne Long and Mary Hawthorne Flint (Bill); and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He began his professional career in the fall of 1957 as a mathematics instructor at Jackson County Training School. He later continued his teaching career at St. Paul High School in Campbellton, Florida. His commitment to education and service continued as he became an employee and retired from the Gadsden County School System, where he worked at River Junction Correctional Institution.
Throughout his life, he was known for his dedication to education, his love for his family, and his commitment to serving others. He was the chairman of the L. L. Hawthorne, Sr., Memorial Scholarship Fund. In 2022, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Sheriffs Association for his loyal support as an honorary member of the Florida Sheriffs Association.
His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the students he taught, and the family and friends who loved him dearly.
