Mr. Simmon Eugene (Sims) Massenburg, Jr., Junior as he was affectionately called, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 22, 2020 in Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan. He was 90 years old.
He was of the Baptist faith and a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He served military time in South Korea and was awarded six Medals of Honor for his excellence and dedication to service. He was a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and the St. Joseph Lodge #99.
Junior leaves a legacy of fond memories and cherished thoughts with his loving family: his devoted, loving and caring wife of 68 years, Rebecca Massenburg of Marianna, Florida; his children, Dr. Dianne Godwin Thornton, Virginia Godwin Spires, Gloria Massenburg Baker and husband Harris, Peggy Massenburg Kelly and husband Leon all of Marianna, Florida, Chrisella Massenburg of Brandon, Florida and Alvin Massenburg and wife Yvette of Denver, Colorado and Joseph Brinson and wife Wanda of Cocoa, Florida; daughter-in-law, Mary Bush of Marianna, Florida; He is also survived by 20 grand children Ret LTC Rhonda Wynder (Ret. Col Christopher) , Leonard Daniels III (deceased), Brian Daniels (Ebony), Melloney Spence (Paul), Latina Broxton (Alex-deceased), Marvin Barnes, Phillip Barnes (Brandy), Tiffany Peterson, Kevin Peterson (Crystal), Jason Peterson, Crystal Spires, Asia Brown, Travis Baker (Andrea), Angela Kelly-Armstead (Dwakel), Marcus Kelly (Nesha), Letiesha Massenburg, Pamela Massenburg-Nelson (Kebra), Christopher Glover, Brandon Massenburg, and Dr Maurice Bush (Jennifer); 47 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A public viewing will be held Monday, November 30th from 3-6 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel.
A homegoing celebration will be held graveside Tuesday, December 1st at 11 a.m. at St. John Church Cemetery with Pastor Alonzo Wilburn and Rev. Freddie Roulhac officiating. Interment will follow with Military Honors provided by the local VFW Honor Guards. All arrangements are entrusted to the Caring Staff at Peoples Funeral Home of Marianna.
