Margaret Jean Shanks, 85, daughter of the late Rev. Roosevelt and Mary Quinn, was born on November 8,1940, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the second child in a family of eight children. She departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Greatly influenced by the Christian values in the home, she professed a hope in Christ early in the life and united with the First Baptist Church Mountain Park under the leadership of Rev. O. C. Carter. She served as a loyal and faithful member. In May of 1959, she graduated from A.H. Parker High School. One of her desires was to attend and graduate from Alabama State University in Montgomery Alabama. God Blessed her and her desire was granted.
After two years of college, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Frederick D. Shanks on December 22nd, 1961. A loving and devoted relationship existed in this union. One month after their wedding date her husband was drafted in the U.S. Army. Her teaching career began in the Wilson Elementary School in Trifton, Georgia for two years. She then went on to teach at the Nichols Elementary School in West Point, Kentucky. Her Husband was stationed in Pirmasens, Germany for five years while she taught at the Pirmasens Elementary School all five years.
After five years in Germany they returned to Fort Knox, Kentucky. She joined the faculty at McDonald Middle School. She was a dedicated and resourceful teacher who influenced the lives of many boys and girls. In 1969, she joined First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky under the Leadership of Rev. B. T. Bishop. She was a faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist. She was a Sunday School Teacher, she was a youth leader, she sang in the choir and was the officers wives President.
August 2016, she united with St. Stephen Church in Radcliff, Kentucky under the leadership of Dr. Kevin Cosby. She was a member of the Choir, the evangelistic team, Prayer Ministry, Women's Ministry, and Senior Ministry. She dedicated many hours to community service. God told her to start a Women's Weekly Bible Study in her home in 1980. She obeyed and it did prosper, however, with many of the ladies getting ill she ended the bible study in 2019. She taught weekly Bible Study at the Hardin County Detention Center of prisoners over twenty years in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick D. Shanks Sr. Parents: Roosevelt Quinn Sr & Mary Quinn, Brothers: Roosevelt Quinn Jr and James Quinn. She is survived by her three Children, Laquita Perry (Nat), Frederick Shanks II (Rita), Shonta Jones (Lorenza), 7 grandchildren: Nathaniel Perry III (Kristin), Ciera Shanks, Dezmond Perry (Jacqueline), Tia Shanks, Lalah Ware, Nilah Ware, and Fredericka Shanks; 6 great grandchildren: Taniya Shanks, Saniya Shanks, Major Shanks, Alayia Shanks, Kayson McMillian Dakari Perry; and her Siblings: Charles Quinn, Beverly Davis, Janice Frank, Jerome Quinn (Lolita) and Tommy Quinn (Donna). She will be greatly missed by her family, many friends, and others who knew her.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026 at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Radcliff with Rev. Richard Lockett, Eulogist. Burial will follow in North Hardin Memorial Gardens.
Visitation after 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2026 at Percell & Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.

My condolences to the family.
I am saddened to hear about the death of my dear Sister in Christ and friend Margaret. We shared many moments together around the table and in our homes. We ministered to each other regularly about our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ during our membership @ Cannan Christian Church. My friend will be missed by all who had the opportunity to meet and know her. To Margaret's Family, I am praying that God Our Heavenly Father continue to be with you now and forever as she is laid to rest. Rest in Peace my dear sister.

I had the joy of knowing Mrs. Shanks only for a little while, but in that little time I ascertained she was a vivacious lovely woman with a joy for life & all things holding beauty... she herself was beauty.. may she rest until she hears the voice of Christ call her name!
