Doris Miller passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Doris Lee Miller was born in Lenoir County, Kingston NC on December 23, 1940 to the union of Andrew and Florence Oliver. Doris, the third of four daughters, attended Kingston’s Adkins High School. After graduation, she moved to New York, NY. There, she met and on March 11, 1961 married John Miller who preceded her in death. To their union were born three children, Tangela, Jeffrey, and Sharon. Doris worked in the finance department for the United States Post Office for over 30 years before retiring.
Later in years, Doris met the love of her life, Marvin Capers. It was widely known by family and friends that Doris loved to have a good time. She entertained with
wonderful parties where those in attendance knew they could enjoy playing cards, eating great food and dancing the night away listening to the oldies but goodies.
Doris also loved bowling and joined a bowling league where she did very well. After retirement Doris led an active lifestyle. She attended the Senior Center in
Brownsville, NY where she played cards and bingo. She later became a volunteer at the Center. Doris also participated at the fitness center in Brooklyn, NY.
Doris was a caring person who took pride in helping others. She helped those in her community and through her long membership at Brownsville Community Baptist.
One of Doris’ dearest passions was sewing. For her daughter Tangela’s wedding she made 5 bridesmaid dresses and the maid of honor dress.
In 2013, Doris and Marvin moved to Charlotte, NC. There she attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. In April 2022, she moved to Whitsett, NC. with her daughter and son-in-law. Until her health failed her, she attended church with them at Providence Baptist Church.
Loving family members and friends who predeceased her but bear mentioning are her older sister Virginia Edwards, 2nd oldest, Carolyn J. Havens, ex-husband, John Miller and longtime partner, Marvin Capers
Doris leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Tangela Dozier and son-in-law Rory Dozier (Whitsett, NC) son Jeffrey Miller (Amboy, NJ) daughter Sharon Perry (Brooklyn, NY) stepdaughter June Johnson (Charlotte, NC), sister Elizabeth Oliver (Brooklyn, NY) sister-in-law Martha Lee Benders (Troy, NY), grand children: Jeffrey Miller, Jr (Amboy, NJ), Michelle Morton (Hackensack, NJ) Jayquan Miller (Amboy, NJ), Nathan Perry (Waterbury, CT) Brandon Perry (Brooklyn, NY), Robyn Dozier( Greensboro, NC) Teresa Dozier (Raleigh, NC), 7 great grandchildren,
nieces, nephews cousins a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Providence Baptist Church, 1106 Tuscaloosa Street Greensboro, North Carolina. Visitation will be held prior at 11:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3901 Forest Lawn Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455.
