I send my prayers and deepest well of sympathy to the Johnson family. I never got to tell George how grateful I was over the years, as we tended to find time to meet over lunches and dinners when he lived in Washington. We shared a love of our Beloved College, Amherst. George, through his character and life long work in education, inspired me beyond words. He encouraged me to do the work that I do today, which is to develop a generation of Black boys to lead in their communities, the nation and the world. May George rest in peace and rise in power. Jack Johnson Pannell, Jr. (Amherst '80)
My deepest condolences to the family.
Love from the Berk family.
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.
My Man My Brother My Friend....Larry McCaden
