Gloria Marcissa Brown departed peacefully at Beacon Place, Tuesday December 19th, 2023.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Willie Brown of Greensboro, NC.
Born August 25th, 1955, Gloria grew up in Greensboro N.C., on Shaw Street where she
attended Jonesboro Elementary School. She joined United Institutional Baptist Church at an
early age and served on the junior usher board. She attended James B. Dudley Senior High
School until the federal desegregation court order of 1971 was passed. She was amongst the
first class of scholars sent to other schools in Guilford County. She later graduated from Walter
T. Hines Page High School in 1973. Following high school, she attended the illustrious North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and majored in Early Childhood
Development. After college, she enlisted in the United States Army.
After serving her country, Gloria’s passion for children led her to a career in teaching starting at
Grace Lutheran Day School. She eventually pursued a career with Guilford County Schools
where she taught K-5 in the Exceptional Children department for 15 years. Following her
retirement from Guilford County Schools, she was a substitute teacher at Johnson’s Daycare.
Gloria was known for being a dependable person. No matter what the task was, she was
promptly ready to provide support in any capacity that she could. Her close friends and family
know about her love for fried fish, coleslaw, a cold one , and her die hard love for the Dallas
Cowboys.
Gloria leaves behind a loving family of two brothers Gordon B. Brown (Greensboro, NC), Morton
H. Brown (Greensboro, NC), a sister Willie Ruth Brown (Greensboro, NC), children Jamarr
Brown and wife Taryn Brown (Charlotte, NC), Chanel Brown (Elkridge MD), four grandchildren
Brianna, Amani, Kalum, and Asher. A special niece Jaime L. Brown (Greensboro, NC) and a
host of loving friends and extended family.

Gloria and I were classmates in the first grade at Jonesboro Elementary School and Class of '73 graduates at Walter Hines Page Senior High School. She was among a special group of friends I have known since childhood who were also classmates. I remember Gloria as kind, considerate, and one of many outstanding students in our class. My sincere condolences to the Brown family and to all who loved her. I pray her family finds peace and comfort in the happy memories that will cherished forever. Craig Cotton

My loving sister/cousin and BFF I will miss our thanksgiving dinners the most especially your sweet potato pie (I can't make no matter how many times you showed me) I will miss your advice the loving way you calmed me down when I was upset. I will miss our phone conversations and texting with you on a weekly basis to share good or bad news. Thank you for all of your luv advice. Thank you for all the fun we had when you came to Georgia to see mama and me. I luv you with all my heart. None to Gloria as cousin Maria. You will be a part of my heart always.
I will miss talking to my friend! I first met Glo when our oldest children were in a wedding at age 4. She was encouraging and suportive to them back then, just as she always, always was when we connected again as Dudley Band Boosters for all four of their marching years. She served as a volunteer parent when her daughter and granddaughter were in my Girl Scout troops. I can't think of a time that I would call and we would have such a good conversation about just anything. Or, the many Friday nights after our children graduated from Dudley that we would meet to cheer the Panthers on. I will truly miss her. I know that she did this illness the way she wanted by not wanting others to worry or pity her. I will cherish my last talk to her, the night before she passed. I prayed that God would grant her last walk home without pain and to know I loved her & cherished our friendship. Family, please know that your mom & grandma thought the world of all of you. She might have fussed but she always had everyone of your backs. Grieve knowing that she was just another angel placed here on Earth for a short time & memories made by her will be here forever. Cecelia Shaw(Known to Gloria as Florence)
