Irving Edward Hemingway was born on November 9, 1950 to Clarence and Gladys Hemingway. He grew
up in St. Albans and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He was an active member of Grace
United Methodist Church attending Sunday School and participating in youth fellowship programs. He
was also a Boy Scout.
He began his career by working for the New York Telephone Company and then trained five years to
become an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW) Local 3. When jobs were scarce he went west to Washington state and then settled in California and became active with Local 617 Electrician Union. He remained in California for more than twenty years then he returned to New York to help take care of his mother. He is pre deceased by his father and mother who passed respectively in 2005 and 2016. Before he passed he was an active member of St. Albans
Congregational Church where he helped coordinate monthly food drives. He also coordinated the weekly food pantry at Hollis Avenue Congregational Church.
Irving leaves behind his wife Shelby and a host of family and friends including his children: Heidi, Elizabeth, Irving Jr., grandchildren: Donald, Jada, Jeffrey Jr., Alexis, Aniya, Darien, Derrick, Lamont, Serenity, great grandchild: Donald 3rd, cousins: Trina, Leroy, Crystal, in-laws: Anita, Eric, Melissa, Melanie, IBEW friends and colleagues including his best friend Bobby. Included in this beautiful bouquet of memories is his brother Michael and sister Elizabeth.
Irving will always be remembered as a family man, caring father, loving husband and brother, faithful
friend, lover of cars, gadgets and tools; a person you will always remember because he was always there
when needed.
On behalf of the family of Irving E. Hemingway we thank God for a life well lived, full of fun, determination, hard work, sacrifice, and love. And we leave you with a quote of scripture from Micah 6:8 What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. Amen.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, February 19, 2026 12pm Cassie Coote Brown Memorial Chapel at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home 909 East Market Street Greensboro, North Carolina. Visitation 11:30am.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery 3910 Forest Lawn Drive Greensboro, North Carolina.
