To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1
A Time to Be Born On August 19,1932 James Herbert Scales, Sr., was born in Rockingham County North Carolina into the loving and nurturing family of the late Robert and Bertha Neil Scales. Mrs. Scales went home to be with the Lord when James was a young child. He was blessed with a loving step mother, the late Edna Scales who reared him as her own. He was the second of two children. His brother Marshall, preceded him in death.
A Time to Serve James was educated in the Guilford County School System, graduating from James B. Dudley High School in 1951. He enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and was Honorably discharged in 1958. After serving with the US Army, James attended NC A&T State University. James was employed by Lorillard Tobacco Company and retired with thirty -five years of service. He along with his family owned The Scales Grill, a local eatery located on the family property.
A Time to Worship James confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Elm Grove Baptist Church in Reidsville NC. After moving to Guilford County, he united with White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he was a faithful member and served in many capacities. James served as the Church Treasurer, a member of the Trustee Board, Usherβs Ministry, and the Male Chorus. James was also instrumental in the development of the community playground. He was supportive of events held by the White Oak Grove Community. He was always willing to do whatever was needed for the betterment of the church and community.
A Time to be Happy It was while at NC A&T that James met the love of his life, Fannie Berry. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1959 and were married for sixty two beautiful years. To this union four children were born, Herbert, Arnold, Zetta and Melanie. Three preceded him in death, Arnold, Zetta and Melanie. James was a true family man and loved spending time with all of his family. He and Fannie loved to entertain and always welcomed family and friends into their home. He loved to travel and would travel across the United States supporting his grandsons in their sporting activities. James also enjoyed bowling and had bowled on different leagues over the years.
A Time to Die On Monday, July 5,2021 as God walked through His garden, one He had made with His own hands, the sun shining on each blossom, young and old throughout all lands; He walked still searching for a lovely, full grown flower, pausing, He found that James was ready to be taken at that hour.
A Time to Mourn Those left to cherish his memory and emulate his life include his loving wife of sixty-two years Fannie Berry Scales; his son James Herbert Scales, Jr., and his wife Parris; his grandsons, James Herbert Scales III (Erin) and Christoper Scales, great-grandson, Easton James Scales. He also leaves many other relatives and friends who will also cherish his memory.
A service honoring his life will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021 at United Holy Church of America, 5104 Dunstan Rd, Greensboro, NC 27405. The visitation will begin at 12:00pm and the service will follow at 1:00pm. Burial Lakeview Memorial Park.
