Marian Edythe Vaughan Thornhill Logan was born in rural Roseland, Virginia, (Nelson County) on July 7,1921. She was one of eight children born to the late Deacon Walton L Vaughan and Deaconess Alice Reynolds Vaughan. She passed away peacefully with family by her side, May 7, 2025. She was 103 years old before she transitioned to her heavenly home.
Marian was raised in a strong Christian household where she was blessed with spiritual core foundations that upheld family values, educational aspirations, and an exceptional work ethic. As a young girl, Oak Hill Baptist Church prepared her for the changing world outside of her farming environment during the Depression years. She graduated eleventh grade from Oak Hill School. After migrating north to live with relatives, she attended Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY. for one year.
Living with relatives and working as a stenographer in the U.S. Army ODB, (Newark, NJ), Marian was able to make a mark for herself in the WW II workplace. It was during this time that she met her first husband, Richard Thornhill, an Army veteran and teacher from Montclair, NJ. They married and later made their home in Greensboro, NC where Richard joined the faculty at A&T College. To this union were born four daughters, Marian, Brenda, Mildred and Barbara.
Following her husband’s untimely death in 1952, Marian had to make a life changing decision. Surrounded by her nurturing “village family”, she chose to take a step of faith, resilience and fortitude. She would return to college and complete her education. God had not finished with her yet. During her college years at A&T College (now NC A&T State University) she was blessed with being rewarded a scholarship, work and once again love. There she met and later married Quinton C Logan, her devoted husband of thirty-one years. To this union were born Alvin and Cheryl Logan. Together they became a family of eight. Greensboro became her home for the last six decades of her life.
With God’s guidance and much determination, Mrs. Logan received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NC A&T State University. She believed that furthering one’s education was most important and she instilled that in her children. She embarked upon a career path at NC A&T where she worked as sec to the School of Nursing, Clerk in the Registrar ‘s office and Counselor in the Admissions office. She retired in 1983 after 26 years of combined service. Yes, Aggieland was her heart and soul!
Mrs. Logan has been a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church since 1958. Over the years she has served in the Alert Circle, the Women’s Missionary Circle, Sanctuary Choir, Community Service Guild, Adult Sunday School class, and Women’s Day Fashion Show Coordinator.
Her lifetime membership with Beta Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been a special part of her life as she has always been an advocate for community service and women’s initiatives. She loved her sorority and cherished the lifetime friendships over the years.
The Dudley Heights and church community knew Marian as “Miz Logan” and affectionately referred to her as “the fashion lady”. She was known for her impeccable taste in hats, shoes, and clothes, often gracing the fashion runaways at church. Over the years, her home became a “second home” to all her children’s friends. They all benefited from her wit and humor, saddled with words of wisdom. She worked excitedly to complete her daily crossword and jumbo puzzles out of the newspapers each day.
Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 31 years, Quinton C. Logan, her parents, and six of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy of light and love to one son, five daughters, and one stepson. Marian McClure of Charlotte, NC (Benjamin, deceased), Carl Logan of Lorraine, Ohio (Marilyn), Brenda Holmes of Concord, NC (Timothy), Deacon Mildred Smith of Sanford, NC (Ricky), Barbara Joyner of Midlothian, Virginia, Alvin Logan, Sr of Harrisburg, NC (Rachelle), and Cheryl Logan of Greensboro, NC. She also leaves one devoted sister, Lillian Hall of New York, NY, one devoted niece, Shirley V. Freeman of Newark, NJ and one devoted cousin, Patricia Smith Jenkins, Berkeley, California (Calvin). Eight grandchildren will miss her dearly: Lillian Harris of Mosely, Virginia, (Marc), Jeffrey Joyner of Chula Vista, California, Rev. Richard C. Smith of Apex, NC, (Tamika), Justin T. Smith of Apex, NC, (Victoria, Dr.), Jocelyn Cox of Concord, NC, Charles Williams of Atlanta, Georgia, Diana Logan of Charlotte, NC and Alvin Logan, Jr. of Harrisburg, NC. Twelve great-grandchildren and a host of loving cousins, nephews, nieces, and Dudley Heights neighborhood friends will always cherish the fond memories of Grandma Logan!
My deepest sympathy to the Login family. This special lady must have impacted many lives along the way with God's grace, especially aspiring nurses. I will always remember her as one of the first people that I met entering nursing school at NCA&T State University and the professional support provided to students.
