Obituary For Mrs. Shirley Davis

Shirley Brown Davis was born in Randolph County on May 24, 1940 to the late Alberta Brown and Audie Lee Brown. She was the oldest of seven siblings. Shirley moved to Greensboro, North Carolina when she was in the fifth grade. Bettye S. Matier was her first friend at Washington Street Elementary School. Further studies were completed at James B. Dudley High School and at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Shirley joined St. James Baptist Church in her early years, and later joined St. Stephens United Church of Christ where she was an active member of the church finance committee and the women’s fellowship. Shirley graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and mental health. As a result, she worked with pre-trial and post-trial alcohol and drug offenders with mental health issues.

Shirley acquired extensive training in criminology, mental health, and criminal justice dynamics. She was the director of Judicial Services for Guilford County and the Pride Program, which was a major accomplishment. In conjunction with the leadership of Sheriff B. J. Barnes, the Pride Program served Guilford County offenders and was recognized nationally! Shirley retired from Guilford County Judicial Services after thirty-two years of service.

Shirley was a member of the Old North State Temple #142.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband: Thomas Davis; daughter: Deborah T. Davis; mother: Alberta Brown; father: Audie Lee Brown; brothers: Arthur Lee Brown and John Moffitt; and grandson: Quentin B. Davis.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memories her granddaughter: Jasmine Davis; great-grandsons: Tyron Davis and Jamere Sesley; sisters: Willie Mae Trapp and Patricia Fitzgerald (Larry); brothers: Nathaniel Brown (Tammy), Larry Brown (Barbara), and Gary Terrell Brown; her very close friends who were like sisters: Edna McCorkle and Jackie Connor; special children: Pat Alston, Pam Alston, Tony Alston, Handy Yates; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be held Monday, September 19, 2022 at 12pm St. Stephens United Church of Christ . 11:30am Visitation. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
