Nina M. McGregor (affectionately known as “Nina Black”) was born June 14, 1973, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was the only child of Jerome Courts and Ernestine “Tina” McGregor. In addition to her parents, Nina was raised by her beloved Aunt Rilla Chambers who preceded her in death, by her mother Ernestine “Tina” McGregor and brother (Quinton Davis).
Nina was educated in the Guilford County Schools. She obtained her GED and went on to Hair Academy II in Hillcrest Heights, MD in 2013 where received her cosmetology license. She then attended Walden University where she pursed a degree in Communication and Emerging Media. She also became an ordained minister during this time.
Nina was a natural entrepreneur who pursued many different business ventures, including but not limited to: Nina’s Dream (sports bar), Tee-shirt business, men and women’s clothing sales, a stint on 102 JamZ with a radio show named “Dr. Love”, a hot dog stand, and through her entertainment business venture, she helped so many young women by providing them with employment, love, stability and guidance. She was considered by many as the “Unofficial Mayor” of Greensboro. If you lived in or just visited Greensboro, chances are, you knew Nina Black!
She was gifted in so many things, however, she had a passion for rapping, interior decorating, African Art, shopping (clothes, shoes and purses) and providing love and care to the elderly. In 2017, her greatest accomplishment was the birth of her daughter Kennedi McGregor (aka Kennedi X), whom she loved unconditionally and shared a bond that can never be broken. Her entire world and focus shifted when Kennedi was born. She wanted only the best of EVERYTHING for her “phat-phat” including a stellar education and many, many choices for clothes and toys. Kennedi is her pride and joy!
Nina is survived by her daughter, Kennedi McGregor, father (Jerome Courts), Aunt Kathey (Mark) Phifer (Greensboro), Aunt Patricia Alston (Greensboro), Aunt LaTonya Fox (Greensboro), Uncle Ronald McGregor (Goldsboro), a nephew (Tyron Davis); Cousins, Mark (Joy) Phifer, Jr.(Greensboro), Tremaine McGregor (Atlanta, GA), Damon (Tania) Fox (Greensboro), a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren and many, many, many friends.
