Notra Cozette Harshaw Hanner, 90, gained her heavenly wings on Sunday, March 5, 2023, peacefully at her home. She was born in Guilford County on December 12, 1932, to the late Charles Harshaw and Fonza Thacker Staley. She was proceeded in death by one sibling, Ernest Staley.
Notra was educated in the Guilford County School System and graduated from the illustrious James B. Dudley High School, class of 53’. She was very proficient in math, which earned her a scholarship to attend Spelman College but unfortunately she was unable to attend because of reasons beyond her control.
At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined New Calvary Baptist Church, where she was the Vice President of the Senior Usher Board and was an advisor of the Jr. Usher Board. She was recently an active member of New Faith Baptist Church, where she was the chairperson over the Ministry of Helps and served on the Hospitality Committee. She was affectionately called the “best dressed lady” at NFBC, by many. Mrs. Hanner was an active member within her community and sat on the board of the NNO (National Night Out) in the neighborhood for many years. As a result of her generous spirit and friendly personality, she was loved by so many, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Regina Miller (Franklin deceased), Olen A. Tate (Garcia), Shirley McCormick, and Cathy Douglas (Reginald). Grandchildren: Tamara, LaCresha, Simone, Dominique, Lewis III, Sidney, Braysha, Mills, and Ahlaysha. Great grandchildren: Xavier, Rhea’, Jordyn, Kyra, McKenzie, Lewis IV, Shiquille, Amethyst, and Kamryn.
She also leaves her memories to be cherished by Ms. Mary Triplin, who was her “hit the road” buddy. You rarely saw one without the other. Thank you for that true friendship that meant so much to (Hanner) as she would always call Ma. You were always available, and for that Ms. Triplin, we truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
To the family of Mrs. Notra Hanner - She played a CRITICAL role in my growth as a young man at the New Calvary Baptist Church. She would get me to do speeches when I was afraid, she was about things being done in excellence, and the list is endless! I revered her as a mother figure! Heaven has now gained a great one! You all are in my prayers and I pray that God would continue to give you all strength, peace, and comfort not just for this season, but for seasons to come! Rest easy Ma!
