Paul Wayne Scott Sr.
Elder Paul Wayne Scott Sr. went home to be with the Lord at 8:35p.m., Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, NC. He lived a productive life of service by utilizing his gifts and talents to support his family, church, community, and those less fortunate.
Paul’s birth was a blessing to Alonzo Hardy Scott and Margaret Taylor Scott on June 30, 1949. Born in Springfield, TN near Nashville, he had three brothers, and a sister who died as an infant. Paul gave his life to Jesus and was baptized at an early age, played clarinet in Bransford High School Band, and was the organist for the Church of God on Leota Street. He graduated with honors as one of the first African Americans to integrate Springfield High School.
Paul earned his undergraduate degree in business from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a master’s from the School of Technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He was a Charter Member of the Iota Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., at UT-Knoxville (first black fraternity on campus), and served as the Chapter’s first Dean of Pledges. He was also involved with Gospel Choir and Afro-American Student Liberation Force (AASLF).
Professional, Paul held various managerial roles in manufacturing for 39 years. His work at Cargill Inc., Miller Brewing, Reynolds Aluminum, and Ball Container Corporation moved him to Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Paul expanded his skillset as a licensed realtor and residential contractor, built and sold houses, opened a flower shop with his wife, sold insurance, and served as a high school substitute teacher with Guilford County Schools. He also helped his wife with AMEN Communications, Inc. Brother Paul was thrilled to serve as a radio personality on 90.1 WNAA-FM, where he and wife, AbleMable, shared gospel music on “The Sunday Morning Praise Party” throughout the Piedmont Triad, and Southern Virginia. He was best known for playing charismatic, moving music, along with jokes, stories and riddles.
A member of Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ (COGIC) for over four decades, Elder Scott was an associate minister and honor graduate of the first class of Greater North Carolina Jurisdiction’s COGIC Academy. In addition, he served in numerous capacities as a National COGIC Adjutant, Armor Bearer, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Men’s Ministries President, Pastor’s Appreciation Chairman, Benevolence Committee, and led the Wells Memorial Wednesday Online Noonday Bible Study.
He was preceded in death by parents, Alonzo Hardy Scott and Margaret Taylor Scott; three brothers, Robert Earl, Alonzo, Joe Hardy; infant sister, Hazel; and other loved ones.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Dr. Mable Springfield Scott; two sons: Paul Wayne (Whitney and Legend) and Joshua David (JLeasha, Naloni Grace, Mercy Kingston, Jace and Anja); nieces and nephews: Katrina Bigsbee, Alanza Scott, Lonniechia Timberlake, LaDonna Smith, Demarcus Scott, Savion Scott, Kaneshia Scott, Sheena Wynn, Portia Goodall, Luciana Mitchell, Lauranetta Marshall; and cousins: Deborah (Jerrell) Jones, Rev. Quinton (Janie) Yates Sr., Beverly (Roger) Dickerson, Cassandra Fudge, Sabrenia (Michael) Merriman, Kenneth (Patricia) Yates, Rita Taylor, Gloria Taylor, Eric (Teresa) Taylor, Herbert (Yana) Scott Jr., Daryl (Joyce) Scott, James (Regina) Ellis, Ezekiel (Mary) Ellis, Ralph Scott, Carolyn Head, Dallas (Ann) Woodard, Lois Sanders, Faye (Roy) Tillery, and Aliceteen Morrow.
Funeral will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024 12pm Wells Memorial Church of Christ 1001 East Washington Street Greensboro, North Carolina. 11am Visitation. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery 3910 Forest Lawn Drive Greensboro, North Carolina.

My heart was really hurt when I heard of Bro. Paul passing. I never met him or knew him personally, but to listen to him and his wife every Sunday, made me feel like I knew him. Many times, when I called in to answer questions, he was so nice and sweet and funny. I am truly saddened. My memories of Paul are all from UT Knoxville in the '70s when he was with his Omega Psi Phi brothers doing what they do, smile. A good man, a good brother, a great friend. He will be missed. God bless you Mable. Always.❤️
