After an abrupt illness, on July 28, 2023, Rev. Sadie G. Martin transitioned to the heavenly realm.
Reverend Martin was born on October 20, 1938 in Charlotte, NC, as the 6th of 7 children of the late John and Sadie White Givens. She attended public schools in the Mecklenburg County School System, completing her high school career as the valedictorian at Pineville/Sterling High School, Pineville, NC in 1956. She attended Kate Bidding Reynolds School of Nursing, Winston-Salem, NC and received both the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Master of Science in Adult Education from NC A&T State University.
In 1958, through God’s providence, she met Jerry E. Martin, Sr, proceeded with courtship and married in 1961. From this marriage 2 sons were born: Jerry E. Martin, II and Jonathan E. Martin.
Reverend Martin’s first career was in nursing and spanned 40 years. This service to others included her role as a registered nurse at Kate Bidding Reynolds Hospital, Winston Salem, NC, Moses H. Moreover, she served as a critical care nurse preceptor; a member of the VA Medical Center Surgical ICU team; and established the Advance Cardiac Life Support training for physicians and nurses at the VA Medical Center and Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC.
Reverend Martin formed her relationship with Jesus Christ early in life with her parents as her Christian role models. This early Christian growth included her faithful membership with Little Hope AME Zion Church, Charlotte NC (now Walls Memorial AME Zion Church). Her involvement with the church community during her formative years served as the foundation for her interest in the ministry. In the early 1960’s, Reverend Martin united with Union Memorial United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC. She served faithfully as a communion steward, a certified Lay speaker, a speaker instructor for the Greensboro District Lay speaking training courses and a member of United Methodist Women. In 2004, Reverend Martin accepted the call for ministry with completing certification for Licensed Ministry of the Western NC Conference of The United Methodist Church. Upon becoming a licensed minister, she served as head pastor at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Kernersville, NC and associate pastor at Wadsworth Congregational Church, Whitsett, NC.

I am very broken-hearted to hear of the passing of Reverend Martin. She was a true woman of God. She was full of love for everyone she met. I will always remember her for her kindness towards me and everyone else. Her words,"thank you for your kindness", will always be in my heart. Reverend Martin was like a precious jewel. I miss her now, and will miss her until we meet again. My comforting thought is that I know she lived her life for her transition, and she looked forward to that day. I will always love and respect her. Reverend Martin, take your rest now. Love always...Marilyn Israel-Hicks
