Mrs. Romona Gibson passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 600 E. Florida Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27406. Visitation 1:30 p.m.
Romona Washington Gibson passed away on August 14, 2024, at her home in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was born on November 11, 1951 in Charleston, South Carolina, where she grew up and graduated from Charles A. Brown High School. She then attended Talladega College, majoring in English and becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Although she lived in different places up and down the East Coast, Charleston was always the home she returned to. It was there that she met the love of her life, Russ, during a summer break from school. They married at her parents' home on June 14, 1975.
Her professional life involved working as a high school teacher, preschool teacher, and insurance adjuster, before she retired in 2018. In her personal time, she enjoyed gardening, reading mystery novels, watching mystery shows, HGTV, and all of the "Law and Order" series. She also served in her church, St. Matthew's UMC, as a choir member, food pantry volunteer, and leader of Girl Scout Troop 1726. She expressed her artistic side through acting, from performing the lead role in "Hello Dolly!" in high school to being active for several years in plays held by the St. Matthew's Drama Ministry. She will be remembered as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her father and birth mother: Herman and Lula Waring Washington; and a brother: Herman Lee Haynes. Left to hold on to the memories made with her is her husband of forty-nine years: Russell, Sr.; second mother: Lucille Washington of the home; brother: Peter Washington of Charleston; daughter: Lydia Gibson (Christopher Cecil) of High Point, North Carolina; son: Andrew of Greensboro, North Carolina; stepson: Russell, Jr. (Dr. Pamela) of Indian Land, South Carolina; granddaughters: Zoya Cecil, Maliyah, and Layla Gibson; and a host of in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
I send my deepest condolences to Ramona's Family and Friends. I pray that God comfort and strengthen you during this difficult time. Soror Carol Canteen
Romona is a great loss. It was my privilege to work closely with her for eight years at Penn National Insurance, the last five of which I was her Team Leader. She was a hard worker and diligent in her claim handling. More importantly, she was a wonderful person. We shared many lunches together during our time as co-workers, and she was actively involved in planning my retirement party 10 years ago. I am blessed to have been able to share the last years of my career knowing and working closely with Romona. Rest well, dear friend!
